Opened up an older Furuno open array radar today. It had problems turning. I loosened up the metal plate covering the gears and saw little white shavings. I knew what the problem was before I got the cover off. The gear was damaged. It had run perfectly for 20 years until recently when something on the roof fell into the path of the spinning radar. Something's gonna give if it can't spin and it was the gear. I'll shop for a replacement gear next week. We've changed them before.

More customers are having a second computer on their boat for redundancy. (Timezero has a more affordable cost for a 2nd computer on the same boat.)

If you have more than one TimeZero computer on your boat and they are networked together (such as for radar, dff3d, MFD, etc..) they can automatically share marks and tracks with each other. In Timezero menu, options, Device list, you can "Allow local user object synchronization" to let your normal Timezero marks/tracks layer be synced to both computers and MFD. If you are using custom named layers, you can also share them with "Synchronize all layers".

This does not sync recorded PBG bottom data between computers. That's still done manually with import/export and USB if you want. (We can also make any sounder send depth to two computers instead of one)

We're making more of our antenna stand mounts for the excellent Furuno SCX20 satellite compass. It's good to have mounting options for the sat compass. The 1-1/14 thread gets some of Furuno's included adhesive and it screws right on.

First comment is for a website where you can review traffic trends for different years. Perhaps it confirms some spots were a bad idea to set some traps because of traffic! This is not all traffic; just boats with AIS. As it's a government website, I suspect the AIS data is USCG collected rather than crowdsourced like marinetraffic. Routine traffic makes stronger and stronger lines. Fishing activity is just little yellow noise in an area.

You bought a new VHF radio and it's complaining it does not have position? You have two options when buying a VHF radio these days.. .Spend a few extra and get the one with built in GPS and you're good. Spend a few less and get the one that needs to be wired up to GPS. This can be the more costly option....

This radio has two easy ways... You can get a GPS antenna that plugs into the little connection on the left. Those are typically $50-$150. On the right is a 5-pin NMEA2000 connection. If you're one of our customers with a sat compass on a well equipped boat, you might be able to plug it into the NMEA2000 network with a $30-$60 NMEA2000 cable which we sell and be in business. Radios might also have NMEA0183 wires which requires hardwiring it to a plotter or GPS instrument; this typically requires cabling and onsite labor. New radios send position when a distress call is made. While most people won't get in trouble for not having position on their radio, things are moving in that direction to reduce false alerts and to provide efficient emergency response.
