TEXAS WATER SHORTAGE
Texas is facing a critical water supply shortage, particularly in South Central and West Texas, driven by severe drought, population growth, and aging infrastructure. Reservoirs like Lake Corpus Christi are under 10% capacity, and state projections suggest a 10% decrease in water supply by 2080. The state is responding with massive investments, though experts advise accelerating water projects to prevent severe economic damage.
Current Water Supply Situation (As of April 2026):
Critical Deficit: The state is facing a potential, long-term water shortage due to prolonged drought and increased demand, with the worst impacts seen in South Texas.
Corpus Christi Crisis: The city's main reservoirs, Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon, are under 10% capacity, prompting stage three restrictions and preparations for a water emergency, with 180 days of supply potentially left.
Declining Aquifers: Texas aquifers are being over-extracted, with 75% of state rivers and major aquifers seeing declining levels. The Gulf Coast Aquifer faces depletion from over-extraction, and the Ogallala Aquifer is also declining.
Aging Infrastructure: Widespread aging water pipes and inefficient systems contribute to major water losses. Texas water systems lose at least 572,000 acre-feet per year to leaks.
Key Drivers:
Rapid Growth & Industry: Increasing urbanization in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio, coupled with water-intensive industry, is outpacing supply.
Climate & Drought: High temperatures and extreme drought continue to dry out surface water supplies.
Future Outlook and Mitigation:
Investment Plan: Texas is exploring a projected
billion in infrastructure upgrades to tackle a 10% supply drop expected by 2080.
Proposed Solutions: Proposals include developing new water sources such as desalination, seawater desalination, brackish groundwater extraction, and water recycling.
State Intervention: State officials are encouraging the use of grants from the Texas Water Development Board for water projects.
