TEXAS WATER SHORTAGE

Texas is facing a critical water supply shortage, particularly in South Central and West Texas, driven by severe drought, population growth, and aging infrastructure. Reservoirs like Lake Corpus Christi are under 10% capacity, and state projections suggest a 10% decrease in water supply by 2080. The state is responding with massive investments, though experts advise accelerating water projects to prevent severe economic damage.
Current Water Supply Situation (As of April 2026):

Critical Deficit: The state is facing a potential, long-term water shortage due to prolonged drought and increased demand, with the worst impacts seen in South Texas.
Corpus Christi Crisis: The city's main reservoirs, Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon, are under 10% capacity, prompting stage three restrictions and preparations for a water emergency, with 180 days of supply potentially left.
Declining Aquifers: Texas aquifers are being over-extracted, with 75% of state rivers and major aquifers seeing declining levels. The Gulf Coast Aquifer faces depletion from over-extraction, and the Ogallala Aquifer is also declining.
Aging Infrastructure: Widespread aging water pipes and inefficient systems contribute to major water losses. Texas water systems lose at least 572,000 acre-feet per year to leaks.

Key Drivers:

Rapid Growth & Industry: Increasing urbanization in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio, coupled with water-intensive industry, is outpacing supply.
Climate & Drought: High temperatures and extreme drought continue to dry out surface water supplies.

Future Outlook and Mitigation:

Investment Plan: Texas is exploring a projected
billion in infrastructure upgrades to tackle a 10% supply drop expected by 2080.
Proposed Solutions: Proposals include developing new water sources such as desalination, seawater desalination, brackish groundwater extraction, and water recycling.
State Intervention: State officials are encouraging the use of grants from the Texas Water Development Board for water projects.

Why You Should Never Click on Random Text Messages!

Your smartphone can be a direct line to your bank account — and scammers know it. In 2024 alone, Americans lost a staggering $470 million to text message fraud. Whether it’s a fake delivery alert or an “urgent” message from your bank, one wrong click can compromise your entire financial life.

Tech Time has a simple rule: If you receive a random text with a link, don’t click it.
The 30-Second Cheat Sheet: What To Do Right Now

If you are looking at a suspicious text this very moment, follow these three steps:

Do not click any links.
Do not reply (even to say “STOP” just confirms your number is active).
Forward to 7726 (SPAM). This alerts your carrier to block the sender across their entire network.

How To Spot a “Smishing” Scam

“Smishing” (SMS Phishing) is the practice of using text messages to trick you into giving up personal data. Scammers are getting smarter, often using AI to fix the typos and grammatical errors that used to be dead giveaways.
The “Red Flag” Checklist

Before you trust a text, check for these signs:

A sense of panic: They want you to act now before you have time to think.
Shortened links: Be wary of bit.ly or tinyurl.com links that hide the final destination.
The “10-Digit” sender: Major companies usually use 5- or 6-digit “shortcodes.” A random 10-digit number claiming to be “Amazon” is almost certainly a scam.
Mismatched URLs: A text from “Wells Fargo” that directs you to wellsfarg0-secure.com (note the zero) is a trap.

5 Common Text Scams to Avoid

While some scams are old favorites, others are new and increasingly dangerous:
1. The “Hi Mom” or Family Emergency

Scammers pretend to be a loved one who has lost their phone or is in legal trouble. They ask for an immediate wire transfer or gift card code. Call that family member directly on their known number before doing anything.
2. The “Pig Butchering” (Wrong Number) Scam

This starts with a friendly “Is this [Name]?” message. When you reply it’s a wrong number, they try to start a conversation to build trust over weeks, eventually “fattening you up” for a fake cryptocurrency investment.
3. USPS/FedEx “Failed Delivery”

You’ll get a text saying a package is held due to an incorrect address or a $1.99 “redelivery fee.” It’s a ruse to steal your credit card information.
4. The “Text from Yourself”

A recent twist involves receiving a text from your own phone number. “You’re like, ‘Wow! What’s going on here?'” “You click on it and download a virus that allows criminals to engage in all kinds of mischief.”
5. Bank and IRS Alerts

The IRS will never contact you via text to discuss your tax return. Similarly, your bank will never text you a link asking for your PIN or Social Security number.
How To Block and Report Scammers

Blocking a number on your device is your first line of defense.

For iPhone

Open the text message.
Tap the Contact Icon at the top, then tap info.
Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.

For Android

Open the Phone app.
Tap a call/message from the number you want to block.
Tap Block/report spam.

Final Thoughts

If a text looks legitimate — perhaps from your actual airline or credit card — Tech Time says you should still never use the link provided.

“Go outside of that message. Go to your web browser or use the official app on your phone. Sign into your account there, and you will see if there is a real issue that needs your attention. Period.”

By taking 60 seconds to log in through an official channel, you eliminate the risk of the scammer’s “hook.”
