🚨 **MAINE EMPLOYERS: New Labor Laws Take Effect Today — July 29, 2026**
The Maine Department of Labor has announced several new labor laws taking effect today that impact employers and employees across the state. It's a lot of information!
Here are the several changes Maine employers should be aware of:
💰 **PAY TRANSPARENCY**
Employers with **10 or more employees** must now include the anticipated pay range in advertisements for available positions. Current employees may also request the pay range for their position, and employers have new pay-history recordkeeping requirements.

👀 **EMPLOYER SURVEILLANCE**
New requirements address electronic workplace monitoring, including notification requirements for prospective and current employees and additional protections involving employees' personal property and electronic devices.

⚖️ **LABOR STANDARDS ENFORCEMENT**
The Maine Department of Labor's authority to investigate labor-law violations has been clarified and strengthened, including inspection of records, witness interviews, subpoenas and remedies involving unpaid wages, damages and civil penalties.

🧪 **WORKPLACE SUBSTANCE USE TESTING**
Maine has modernized several requirements surrounding employer substance-use testing, including Medical Review Officers, qualifying rapid oral-fluid screening, breath alcohol testing and reasonable-suspicion standards.

There are also changes involving **health care noncompete agreements, workplace safety programs, Paid Family and Medical Leave, unemployment insurance and workforce development.**
