FB needs to fix its security and account recovery options!
I've had two people in the last 24 hours report that have had their account hacked; immediately the email was changed and the password changed so the account was Inaccessible out for the user, and to my knowledge there is no way to recover that information as of right now except going through the help center (which you can't get to because you're locked out of the account). In addition to losing access to their pictures and posts, Etc., the more immediate concern would be what the hackers are using the illegitimate Facebook account for: are they posting horrible things or they selling the information on the account to a third party? I don't really know, but it's not good.
To make matters worse, if you use Facebook to log into other sites, those other sites would also be potentially compromised, which could be especially dangerous if they're Commerce sites (where you might have credit card or other personal information stored).
One way to protect your account is to use an authenticator and turn on two-factor authentication in Facebook which would give you an extra layer of protection against being hacked/locked out. I understand that Google has an authenticator app and I have experience using the the Microsoft one; it works very easily, Plus it assists in keeping your accounts for Microsoft Office or 365 secure.
Until this is fixed I would strongly recommend against using Facebook to log into other sites because it just builds in a vulnerability that is present and there's no way to really fix it.
If you need help setting up one of these authenticator apps just let me know.
Also Use a strong password as avoid tloohe temptation to reuse a FB password on other sites.
Edit: while I appreciate that there are people offering services to recover accounts, the responsibility for that action is completely on Facebook's shoulders; I should not have to contact a (potentially) sketchy individual to recover an account through Facebook when Facebook owns the account!
The purpose of this post was:
1) to increase awareness that these types of hacks are being committed against individuals.2) to help them protect and secure their accounts.
2) to improve Facebook's visibility of how widespread this problem is.
I'm asking Anyone who reads this to share this on their page with hopes that we will get better visibility to Facebook admins about this problem.
