🏫 SCHOOL’S BACK TOMORROW! 🚌

Tomorrow is the first day of school across Hampshire County, which means our roads will once again be filled with school buses, parents dropping off students, and some brand-new teenage drivers getting used to the morning commute.

The Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to slow down, leave a little extra time, and pay attention—especially around school buses and school zones.

🛑 WHEN THE RED LIGHTS FLASH, YOU STOP.

Under West Virginia Code §17C-12-7, drivers approaching a stopped school bus with its red warning lights flashing and stop-arm extended must come to a complete stop while children are loading or unloading.

➡️ This applies to traffic approaching from BOTH directions on public roads, highways, private roads, and parking lots.

➡️ The exception is a divided or controlled-access highway with a physical barrier or separate roadway. Traffic on the opposite roadway is not required to stop.

➡️ Once stopped, remain stopped until the bus begins moving, the bus driver signals you to proceed, or the flashing red lights are turned off.

⚠️ Passing a stopped school bus isn’t worth it. A first offense carries a minimum $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail. More importantly, that few seconds you think you’re saving could put a child’s life at risk.

Please be patient tomorrow morning. Expect delays. Watch for children near the roadway, buses making frequent stops, and young drivers who may still be getting comfortable behind the wheel.
