Some end-of-year thoughts as I think about how I want to show up for nonprofit clients next year.

I've been noticing a recurring theme: most nonprofit brands don’t feel weak because the thinking behind them is bad. In fact, a lot of it is smart, careful, and deeply considered.

What feels thin is the willingness to actually take a position.

When I read a lot of mature nonprofit messaging, I’m rarely confused by what it’s saying. I’m more struck by how cautious it feels. Language that’s been smoothed within an inch of its life. Statements that are technically true, broadly inclusive, and designed to survive internal review rather than land with an actual human being.

I understand why this happens. Nonprofits operate in high-stakes environments where reputation matters, funding is fragile, and a single misstep can feel existential. But over time, that necessary caution starts to harden into a default posture. What begins as prudence slowly turns into a habit of holding back.

The problem is that trust doesn’t form through safety alone. It forms when people sense conviction — not bravado or certainty, but a willingness to be specific and accountable for what’s being said. Clarity always comes with a cost; it creates friction, it excludes someone, and it forces a choice. Most organizations understand that intellectually, but the emotional discomfort of choosing is harder to sit with.

I don’t think the answer is sharper copy or bolder visuals. I think it’s a deeper honesty about what an organization wants to be known for, and what it’s genuinely okay letting go of in the process.

That’s the work I want to do more of in the year ahead.

Here’s to fewer hedged sentences, clearer voices, and nonprofits that sound like themselves.
