For most of the last decade, didn't have to work very hard to attract new business. Community Impact's March 2026 reporting lays out how things have changed in the past year.

📈 Population growth and investment are continuing at a far more measured pace than the frenetic expansion of the late 2010s and pandemic years, and the city is now openly acknowledging its suburban competitors’ growth.

Austin is shifting from a city that let growth come to it, to one that has to actively compete for it, including inside its own metro.

Two months after 's economic development strategy was first reported, City Council actually voted to move it forward this May.

⛳️ Two details worth flagging if you do public-facing work here:
1️⃣ The plan explicitly calls for new global strategies and partnerships, meaning Austin is now positioning itself for site selectors and investors well beyond Texas.
2️⃣ It requires evaluation of public infrastructure needs as part of future economic development deals.

And tucked into the plan: the proposed 2,600-acre Dog's Head annexation along the Colorado River gets called out specifically in this plan as a "structural fiscal lifeline and strategic tool.”
