Things are not always as they appear.

Time is the most valuable commodity any of us have. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. If there’s one thing that gets under my skin, it’s people who don’t know what they want, don’t pay their bills, or simply waste my time.

I’m still running my vinyl business while working a full-time job. That means every hour matters.

I’d like to be very clear about a significant change I’ve made.

There was a time when jobs were completed in the order they were received. Sounds fair, right?

It works great—until people don’t pay their bills.

Going forward, jobs will no longer be completed solely in the order they are received. Customers with outstanding balances, overdue invoices, or a history of not paying will not be prioritized. In many cases, I simply won’t be able to help you.

This does not excuse past-due balances, nor does it eliminate any penalties or consequences associated with them.

And please don’t expect me to answer the phone at midnight, on weekends, after hours, or drop everything I’m doing to bail you out of a situation you created yourself.

I won’t.

My time is valuable. Whether I do this full-time, part-time, daytime, nighttime, or somewhere in between, my overhead is the same as the guy doing it forty hours a week. In some ways, it’s even harder because I have fewer hours available to generate the same revenue.

So if you’ve been trying to get me to do a job for you and haven’t heard back…

If you’re wondering why I’m not returning calls…

If you’re struggling to get me to move your project to the front of the line…

You may want to take a long look in the mirror.

Because the customers who communicate, pay their bills, and respect my time never seem to have that problem.

AI-Generated Images — Like it or Hate it?

Whether we want to admit it or not, we live in a world run on automation. AI is here, it’s being used everywhere, and it’s not going anywhere.

Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more AI-generated images and designs being handed over like they’re ready for production.

Some of them look great at a glance. That’s the problem.

Because “looks good from 50 feet away” and “ready to print” are two completely different things.

Here’s the reality most people don’t think about:

* AI does not care about resolution. If it’s low quality, it will stay low quality.
* AI does not care about spelling or accuracy. It will confidently get things wrong.
* AI does not design for production. It’s built for visuals on a screen, not real-world print or scale.
* What you see is not always what you get. Zoom in and the flaws show up fast.

When I design something manually, I control everything—resolution, layout, spacing, readability, and final output. I can fix problems before they ever become problems.

When I get an AI-generated file after the fact, that control is gone. In a lot of cases, I can’t fix it. I can’t edit it. I can’t salvage it.

So let’s be clear:

* 1000 x 1000 is not “high resolution.” It’s a minimum.
* Bigger files are not optional if you want clean output.
* Downscaling is safe. Upscaling is damage control.
* If you didn’t double-check spelling, you didn’t finish the design.
* If it’s not production-ready, it’s not ready—period.

Now here’s the part people need to hear:

I am always willing to help. I am always willing to assist you in keeping your hard-earned dollars local. But at the end of the day, time is time—and it’s something we don’t get back. My time is pretty valuable, and I need people to understand that I can only do what I can do.

I will do my very best to send things back to you before printing to flag anything that may not print correctly. I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to resolution and making sure things come out looking their absolute best.

I pride myself on investing in the best printing equipment available, but even with top-tier equipment, it is very limited in its ability to fix a problem once it already exists.

Like it or hate it, similar to AI, I have your best interest in mind.

This isn’t anti-AI. It’s reality.

AI is a tool. A useful one. But it does not replace standards, experience, or accountability.

And in print and production work, shortcuts don’t save money.

They cost it.

Did you know that every banner is designed, printed, and finished in-house? From the initial design work to the final hemming and grommet installation, nothing is outsourced. This allows me to maintain quality control throughout the entire process and ensure you receive a finished product that looks great and is built to last.

I can produce banners in nearly any size or width to fit your needs. Whether you need a small birthday banner or a large-scale display for a business, event, or organization, I have the equipment to make it happen. Larger banners do require additional production time, as they consume more material, more power, and significantly more labor to print, finish, and prepare for installation.

Of course, you’re always welcome to provide your own artwork. With the growing popularity of AI-generated designs, I’m seeing more customer-supplied files than ever before.

One thing to keep in mind is that AI-generated artwork can be difficult—or sometimes impossible—to edit or refine once it has been created. Unlike traditional design files, I often don’t have access to the individual elements needed to make changes, corrections, or improvements. For that reason, customer-supplied artwork may require additional preparation, and some modifications may not be possible.

Mandy Funk, April 2026 Community Impact Award Winner

If there was an award for being absolutely incapable of sitting still, Mandy Funk would have won that one years ago.

Instead, she had to settle for the Community Impact Award.

Honestly, I couldn’t think of a more deserving person.

As the owner of The Closet Boutique and Plains Wind Studio, Mandy somehow finds time to run businesses, host classes, volunteer, support local organizations, promote other businesses, keep Main Street looking respectable, and apparently solve problems before most of us have even figured out there is a problem.

I’m fairly certain if Russell ever catches on fire, Mandy will be the one organizing the bucket brigade, designing the event flyer, selling commemorative T-shirts, and sweeping the sidewalk afterward.

What many people don’t know is that Mandy doesn’t just support local businesses with words. She actually helps them.

After my brother was killed, the building I had rented for years was sold, leaving me in a bind. The equipment I operate requires specialized electrical service, which meant setting up shop in my garage wasn’t exactly an option unless I planned on dimming the lights across half the neighborhood every time I turned a machine on.

While I was trying to figure out what to do next, Mandy stepped up and provided me with a space that allowed me to continue operating my business.

That kind of generosity is becoming harder and harder to find these days.

The truth is, Russell is a better place because of people like Mandy. She’s one of those rare individuals who sees something that needs done and simply does it instead of waiting for someone else.

Congratulations, Mandy. This award is well deserved.

Now please sit down and relax for at least five minutes. The rest of us are exhausted just watching you.

But seriously!

Thank you for all that you do. Your hard work and positivity is an inspiration to so many of us.

It’s no secret that I’m also a CDL qualified driver. I live and work in the industry every single day. I understand what the changing roles and requirements mandate.

You might ask yourself, “What does that have to do with sign work, graphics, and graphic design?”

More than you think.

I hear it all the time:
“We want YOU putting the numbers and decals on our trucks because you know what we need better than we do sometimes.”

And truthfully, there’s a lot of truth to that.

I deal with DOT inspectors, motor carrier enforcement, and roadside inspections on a regular basis. I know exactly what they’re looking for because I live in that world too.

Every single day I see trucks rolling down the highway with:
• Letters that are too small
• Decals with no contrast
• Numbers placed where they can’t be easily seen
• Lettering that is barely legible from 20 feet away

All of those things can attract attention from DOT enforcement.

Does it guarantee you won’t get stopped if your truck is lettered correctly? No.

But when an inspector sees your truck going down the highway, the very first thing they’re looking for is your DOT number so they can run your information and look at your FMCSA/CVSA history. If they can’t read your numbers, can’t find them quickly, or they’re improperly displayed, there’s a much higher chance you’re going to end up having a conversation on the shoulder of the highway.

And at the end of the day… who wants that?

This industry is more tightly regulated than your underwear.

Every regulation is enforced, violations are weighted by severity, and those violations follow the driver for three years and the company for two years.

So simply knowing how to cut graphics is one thing.

Knowing the regulations, understanding what is required, and more importantly understanding exactly what DOT enforcement officers are looking for… that’s a whole different world.

A world you truly don’t understand unless you live in it every day.

The biggest thing I’ll tell people is this:

Don’t trust your graphics and lettering to someone who just wants to slap numbers on your truck and send you down the road.

A lot of people making decals have absolutely no idea what commercial drivers deal with every day. They don’t understand DOT visibility requirements, placement standards, or the potential consequences of improperly displayed markings.

There’s a difference between making stickers… and understanding the industry those stickers are going on.

And honestly, this might explain why I already have several trucks on the books over the next several weeks.

People want somebody who understands both sides of the business — not just somebody with a vinyl cutter.

Don’t leave your livelihood a chance. It’s simply not worth it..

Did you know?

All of my sign equipment, materials, and supplies are purchased from Kansas-based warehouses. Not only is it beneficial from a tax standpoint, but if I ever find myself in a bind, I can physically drive to these locations — all of which are within roughly two hours of Russell, Kansas.

That matters.

When you rely on equipment to make a living, downtime costs money. Working with Kansas suppliers makes it much easier for me to get service, replacement parts, technical support, and materials quickly. Most of my shipments arrive within 1–2 days, which allows me to operate far more efficiently without having to warehouse mountains of inventory.

Most people don’t realize this, but dead inventory is one of the fastest ways to bury a small business financially.

Some people think success means having shelves stacked to the ceiling with material. In reality, all that usually means is your money is sitting in a corner collecting dust instead of working for you.

If a warehouse can have it to me in a day or two with free or low-cost shipping, why would I tie up thousands and thousands of dollars unnecessarily?

That’s part of running a smart business.

I’m always looking for ways to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, control costs, and continue providing quality products and services without sacrificing workmanship.

A lot goes into running a business that people never see behind the scenes. It’s more than making decals and sticking vinyl on things. It’s logistics, relationships, timing, equipment maintenance, scheduling, inventory management, and constantly adapting.

That’s why I take pride in what I do.
