With the Windows 11 rush behind us (you did get rid of Windows 10, didn't you?), we now look towards Christmas and the new year. Be aware, memory (RAM) chips have gone up by 100% to 700%, depending on the type. DDR5 RAM, which is the RAM used in current technology has gone up by about 500% so far. The reason is RAM manufacturers are producing less consumer RAM in favor of RAM for AI servers, which make them more money. All devices that use any type of RAM are going to go up in price a LOT next year. Things that use RAM that everyone uses are phones, TVs, tablets, vehicles, well, pretty much any electronic device actually. Things will get interesting.

With Windows 10 coming to end of support on Oct. 14, you may have a computer that doesn't support Windows 11. Fear not. You may not have to buy a new computer. Depending on the brand, I can replace the primary hardware inside the computer for less than buying a new one. Usually around $450+tx. And this isn't some entry level upgrade. It's a mid-high end upgrade that should be viable for another 10 years. Sadly, I can only do this for desktop computers, not laptops.

Ugh. Looks like it's been 3 years since I posted anything, so just in case anyone was wondering, yes, S&S Computers is still functioning and fixing/building computers. We can still provide same-day service in most cases.

Posting messages all the time gets tedious so I tend to refrain from doing so unless I have something important, and new, to say. Ranting about the same scams over and over just gets tedious for the readers so once I have talked about something I don't talk about it anymore unless something changes drastically.

So here we are, 3 years without anything new/important to say, apparently.

Same day service. We can usually do this. If you are desperate to get your computer up and running again quickly, or your network functional again give us a call. We can probably help. I can also usually pull data from dead computers if that is your need.

I know this is a repeat of a previous recent post, but I think it's worth repeating. All the other computer service places are usually 1 or 2 weeks out. Sometimes you can't wait that long, so I'll keep mentioning it and hope the search engines pick up on it.

So, Facebook has been telling me they are going to delete my page because it's a "gray" account. They don't really elaborate on how I managed to create this type of account or provide any way to fix it. Way to go Facebook!! I have sent messages to support with no reply.

I really hate Facebook but since most people use it I am kinda forced to use it too. If my page is actually deleted tomorrow (April 30), then I will try to re-create it and re-post some of my posts from the last couple of years.

Same day service. I can generally do that. Most stores in town are a week or 2 out on their ability to get to something. I keep my customer base lower, but with better customers. This give me the ability to get to things pretty much right away.

So if you have a computer issue and no one can get to it as soon as you would like, give me a call. Even if I have to order parts I can probably get you up and running in 3-4 days tops.

Remember, I am a one-man operation so you are always dealing with the boss.

Windows 11 again. More of a fan than last time. They seem to be fixing things with updates as they go. There are still things that annoy me, but it's getting better. You still don't "HAVE" to upgrade to Windows 11 for another couple of years or so, but it's good to know they are listening to users and trying to make things better in the mean time.

Windows 11. So far not a fan. They have made it SO hard to find certain settings. They have completely removed other settings that were valuable.

Microsoft is keeping with a long tradition of bad upgrades after really good versions of Windows. I was hoping this time they would be able to bypass that history. Nope. For me anyway, Windows 11 sucks.

I have spent most of the day today making tweaks to try to get Windows 11 to where I am sorta happy with it, but most of the tweaks just don't work.

If I didn't have to use Windows 11 in order to support it I would go back to Windows 10 in a heartbeat.

Oh well, hopefully Microsoft or some 3rd party apps can fix this mess over the next few months.

Passwords. Everyone hates them, me included. Well, things are beginning to change.

I have recently started to try out a couple of authentication methods that allow me to virtually eliminate the use of passwords. One is a fingerprint reader and the other is the Yubikey hardware authenticator.

The Yubikey is a hardware device that plugs in to a USB port or uses near-field communication to provide authentication.

The fingerprint reader is also a USB device. You can set it up to log in to Windows and other places that support bio-metric devices.

With either of these devices you can log in to a few services with no password. If you use a password manager that supports either of these devices (I use LastPass) you can pretty much cut out all passwords except for a master password. You would never need to create another password again. You would let your password manager create and store your passwords and use one of these devices to log in to the password manager. Easy peasy.
