Federal agencies, including the FBI and NSA, are urging Americans to reboot, update, and secure their home internet routers following the disruption of a large-scale Russian military hacking operation.
The Threat: Russian Hacking Operation
The alert follows Operation Masquerade, a court-authorized FBI action announced on April 7, 2026, to dismantle a network of thousands of small-office and home-office (SOHO) routers hijacked by the Russian GRU (unit APT28/Fancy Bear).
Method: Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in popular devices, specifically TP-Link models, to manipulate Domain Name System (DNS) settings.
Goal: This allowed them to intercept traffic, redirect users to fake websites (like fraudulent Outlook logins), and steal passwords and authentication tokens.
Scope: Compromised devices were used in over 20 states to target sensitive government and critical infrastructure networks.
Immediate Action Required
Federal officials emphasize that while the FBI has disrupted current access, users must take the following steps to prevent re-infection:
Reboot Immediately: Unplug your router for 30–60 seconds. The NSA recommends doing this weekly at a minimum to disrupt malicious code.
Update Firmware: Check your router’s settings and install the latest security patches. Outdated software is the primary entry point for these attacks.
Change Credentials: Replace default factory passwords with unique, complex ones.
Disable Remote Access: Turn off "Remote Management" features in your settings to prevent hackers from accessing the device from the internet.
Replace Old Hardware: If your router is more than five years old or no longer receiving updates ("End of Life"), federal agencies strongly recommend replacing it.
New Federal Policy Changes
In a related move to address long-term vulnerabilities, the FCC added foreign-produced consumer routers to its "Covered List" on March 23, 2026. This effectively bans the import and sale of new router models manufactured outside the U.S. to prevent potential supply chain backdoors.
