Merck officially broke ground on April 29, 2025 on their billion-dollar Merck Wilmington Biotech site near Elsmere. Officials with Merck Biopharmaceutical Company broke ground on a new, 470,000 square foot biologics center at the Chestnut Run Innovation and Science Park (CRISP) on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The company, headquartered in Rahway, New Jersey, is investing $1 billion in the site which will be a launch and commercial production facility, and the future home for KEYTRUDA, an immunotherapy treatment for various cancers.
Merck said it expects to have the site fully operational by 2028, which will create more than 500 full time jobs and 4,000 construction jobs. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer gave credit to developer MRA group which took over the Chestnut Run facility, formerly occupied by the DuPont Company, with the intention of turning it into a biotech hub. "This today and the other things the MRA Group has done really was beyond my wildest dreams, and I think our wildest dreams five or six years ago," said Meyer, who was New Castle County Executive when the Horsham-based developer took over the site.
Meyer applauded the efforts of Governor John Carney's administration and state economic development officials in working to secure Merck's commitment to Delaware which he said is part of a competition to win the future. "A competition against other states and municipalities and counties around the country, and in some respects a competition with other countries," Meyer said. "They have choices, we are not the only state, we are not the only county that wanted Merck to call this home." The Delaware Prosperity Partnership worked with Merck to offer a state incentive package worth approximately $30 million.
