Today an old Macbook Pro came in with a severely swollen Lithium Ion battery. These batteries off-gas when they are overcharged or shorted and are designed to swell instead of explode. As you can see in the picture all 6 cells of this battery were bad.

The recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is a classic example of how dangerous lithium batteries can be. The Galaxy Note 7 was built in a way that would not allow the battery to expand and this was the ultimate reason for their recall. These phones would catch fire as a hole formed in the outer sheath of the battery from the pressure of gas. The flammable electrolyte would ignite when exposed to oxygen in the air and cause these fires and explosions.

If you ever encounter a swollen battery, stop using the device and have the battery recycled. Do not throw it away!

Recovering data from a nearly 24 year old hard drive that ran Windows 3.1. According to PC Magazine this drive sold for $215 in December of 1994. It could hold 240 floppy disks worth of info and was considered a relatively low-end drive. 1GB (1,000MB) hard drives became much more common in 1995 as prices for the 1GB drives fell to around $350. Today an 8TB harddrive (8,000,000 MB) can be had for around roughly the same $215 as this 320MB drive. The new 8TB hard drive can hold over 5.7 million floppy disks worth of info (25,000x more data).
