Bill West went from a corporate career at AT&T to a partnership in a recovery and mental health facility, and this week he walks us through what that transition actually took.

We get into keeping residents safe, why treatment cannot be one size fits all, and how a program grows through relationships instead of ads.

πŸ—οΈ A contractor can tell you where every excavator is. Ask where the project files live when a PM walks out, and it gets quiet.

Plans, change orders, RFIs and jobsite photos have a way of ending up on one person's laptop and one person's phone. When they leave, so does the record of what was actually built.

It is fixable. Photos should land somewhere central automatically, drawings should be openable by more than one person, and access should shut off the same day someone's last day is.

🐾 Ask any vet practice manager what happens if the imaging computer dies on a Friday afternoon. The pause tells you everything.

Clinics run on practice management software, digital imaging and boarding cameras, and those three usually grew one at a time with nobody looking at the whole picture.

The fixes are small. A second copy of imaging somewhere off that one machine, the clinical network kept separate from the lobby wifi, and camera footage that lasts longer than a few days so you can actually answer a pet owner's question.

That invoice from your vendor looks normal. Same logo, same tone, same person you always deal with. The only thing that changed is the bank account number. πŸ’Έ

That is business email compromise, and it is the most common way small businesses lose real money. No virus, no ransom note, just a convincing email.

The fix is boring and it works. Call the vendor on a number you already had, and confirm any change to payment details out loud before anyone sends a dime.

Two companies, same simulated attack, two very different endings. One team caught it in minutes. The other missed it entirely because their alerts were drowning in noise nobody had time to sort through. Security software you never look at is just an expense. πŸ‘€

For a salon or barbershop, the booking system going down does not cost an hour. It costs the day. βœ‚οΈ

No schedule. No client history or color formulas. No card payments. A stylist trying to remember who is coming in at two.

And because most booking software lives in the cloud, your internet connection is the booking system. If that connection is a single consumer line with no backup, the whole business is on one wire.

Worth a second look.

The hardest part of opening franchise location number twelve is not the build. It is doing it the same way you did location eleven. 🏬

When every store gets whatever the local installer had in the van, you end up supporting twelve different networks with one team, and nothing you learn at one store helps at another.

A documented standard build changes that. Same equipment, same layout, same configuration, same remote access. Every time.

This is the work we do most.

Quick exercise. Count the outside companies that can remote into your systems right now. πŸ”Œ

Your line of business software vendor. Your camera installer. Your bookkeeper. The consultant from three years ago whose access nobody ever turned off.

Each one is a door into your business that you did not build and do not monitor.

You do not have to remove them all. You do have to know they exist, and turn off the ones that should not.
