In November, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan hinted at the Skift Aviation Forum in Fort Worth that ā€œthere’s a worldā€ where the Dallas-based carrier has red-eye flights, but details just hadn’t been figured out yet. At an air travel conference in Colombia hosted by Routes last week, Ryan Green, chief commercial officer at Southwest, said the carrier will add overnight flights from Las Vegas and Hawaii. Those details, he and the carrier hope, will be worked out in the next two years, he said.

: ā€œIt’s a logical evolution for us,ā€ Jordan told The Dallas Morning News in November. ā€œWe have the aircraft, it’s a great way to use an asset that you already have and use it more productively which means more hours in the day. So, we will be doing red-eyes.ā€
Green said he sees an opportunity for 50 red-eye flights a day for Southwest, according to The Washington Post .

Airlines are secretly preparing for something. What could it be?

: seem to be taking actions to reduce overhead cost and their overall expenditure in preparation for something. We saw earlier this year laying off over 800 . Notwithstanding its Department of Justice ( ) blocked merger with , we see doing what it can to reduce expenses as well. To make matters worse, just days ago, announced that it’s slowing hiring and other expense-related activities as it is anticipating some slowdown in its operations in the future.

Air taxis have been quite the buzz for the past two years, are they now running out of lift?

: For over two years, the hot new thing in aviation was electric, vertical takeoff and landing vehicles ( ) otherwise known as . While the has a lot of potential, like many things in the market there can be an excess amount of hype and buzz, far outweighing the level of development or capabilities of the technology. Needless to say, the technological advancement in this area has been quite impressive, but it might just be that beneath the surface things might be slowing down for the two major players in the space, (Archer), and (Joby). Here are some thoughts that we have on the matter:

- Early private sector investments in the segment were heavy. However, it seems as if the pace of private sector investment might be slowing down.

- The highest level of development of the technology was during the time of low interest rates, high venture capital activities, and a so-called ā€œstrong economyā€œ. These conditions are changing.

- With and seeking government and contracts, this might be a sign that private sector alone might not be enough to drive developments at the pace it was over the past two years.

Cutting to the Chase: We are well aware that pilots are not the only ones within the who face mental health challenges. It is also clear that others within the industry who face issues need the same amount of support and help as do. However, if resources are limited and attention span is also limited, we should focus on that part of the problem that has an outsized impact relative to the other segments. Therefore, the initial focus on is important for the following reasons:

First, The impact of an adverse situation occurring because of a pilot's mental breakdown during flight outweighs that of other .

Second, With finite resources, we should always look first at the part of the problem that has the highest impact and tackle that first.

Finally, once we take care of the highest risk, lessons learned there can be applied to the other risk areas.

ā€¼ļø We may never see real change to the stigma surrounding pilots’ mental health; unless…
Why is this important: There are serious disincentives which if not removed will keep from comfortably coming forward to talk more about any challenges they may have. These disincentives act like barriers. We discussed some of these in our article Let’s Talk Pilots’ Mental Health. Fortunately, there are ways to remove these barriers for those pilots who need help. Here are some suggestions:

- The Federal Aviation Administration ( ) should give pilots with issues the assurance that they will not be summarily sidelined by adjusting policies surrounding certification and provide guidance to airlines on how to handle these unique situations.

- The themselves will need to do more with the support of the FAA to help those pilots who are having mental health issues to come forward in ways that will not make them believe that it could affect their careers.

- Finally, there needs to be a joint campaign between the FAA and to help the public understand more about pilot mental health, helping the public to mitigate any or fears that it may have.

Airlines must lay off thousands of employees ahead of the coming economic crisis.

What’s happening: Airlines will be forced in the months ahead, and perhaps for the foreseeable future to lay off employees, starting with non-unionized ones. The is cyclical, and economic shocks are felt almost immediately, and airlines must respond. We see trying to respond, with a few looking to to deal with the challenges, of which some may fear having to file for if they’re not able to find a way to deal with the challenges such as reducing cost. Here’s what we understand so far:

- The airline industry is extremely sensitive to shocks, be they , , or . Thus, we expect airlines to respond dramatically to the coming economic crisis.

- Generally, personnel costs are the largest expense for an airline – with fuel costs a very close second. Therefore, as the economic and geopolitical crisis unfolds, expect airlines to aggressively lay off employees.
