A program listing says it requires US clinical experience. Does it?

Sometimes that is a hard requirement. Sometimes it is a preference. Sometimes there is an exception for the right candidate.

The listing does not say which. So we ask the programs, and the answer comes back yes, no, or preferred.

A waived letter of recommendation carries more weight than one you uploaded yourself.

The reason is simple. Waived means you gave up the right to read it, so the program believes it is an honest account rather than one you approved.

Upload it yourself and you hand that away. Dr. Z on the ERAS step most applicants get backwards.

Programs are not looking for the most impressive candidate.

They are looking for someone they can work with, who will still be there in three or four years.

Those are different tests, and most applicants spend the season preparing for the wrong one.

Submissions opened this morning. You have 18 days.

Here is the part most applicants get wrong: programs cannot open a single application until September 23 at 9 a.m. ET. Certifying today does not put you ahead of someone who certifies on the 20th. So stop panicking about speed and start using the time.

Save this and work it week by week.

Sept 2 to 8, fix what is yours. Personal statement, experience entries, token, photo, LOR authors.

Sept 9 to 15, build the list. Visa sponsorship, year of graduation limits, US clinical experience rules. A program that has never ranked an IMG is not a long shot, it is a wasted fee.

Sept 15, register with N**P. Separate system. Applying does not enter you in the Match.

Sept 16 to 20, last read, then certify. It locks when you hit the button.

Aim for the 20th, not the 22nd. Give yourself three days for the thing that always goes wrong.

September 2 is the day you can submit. It isn't the day anyone reads it. Programs don't see a single application until September 23, and everything sent between those dates lands looking the same.

So don't rush to certify. Certifying locks your application, and one version goes to every program on your list. Aim to certify by September 20 so your documents have time to transmit.

That gives you three weeks. Use them:

✅ Refine your personal statement and MyERAS CV
✅ Make sure your letters and your statement describe the same person
✅ Go deep on your program list. Cut the ones that have never taken someone with your visa, YOG or scores, and spend that money where you're a real candidate

An application sent without conviction costs the same as a serious one. Same fees, same deadlines, same weeks of your life.

Your Step 2 CK and your graduation year are already decided. What is not decided is whether you apply properly, or apply to see how it goes.

The second also leaves you with nothing to learn from, because you never find out whether they turned down you, or an application you did not really send.

A letter written from memory is a general letter, and a general letter reads like every other one in the pile.

Before you ask, hand the writer a brag sheet: who you are, and the specific traits you showed while you worked with them. You are not writing it for them. You are making sure the things worth saying are the things that get said.

What a program is deciding is whether you will be good to work with and whether you will finish. Your score opens a door. It does not walk through it.

Interviews are not talent, they are reps. Answer, score it, rewrite it, repeat.
