A short primer on why "the chip shortage is back" isn't quite the right framing:
The 2021–2022 shortage was largely a memory problem — DRAM, NAND, supporting components. Painful, but the processors at the heart of most embedded designs stayed reachable.

What's happening now is structurally different. AI infrastructure buildout is consuming an enormous share of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity, and the constraint has moved upstream into the CPUs and GPUs themselves.

Why does that matters for embedded specifically:
Carrier boards and motherboards aren't generic. Each is engineered around a specific processor SKU — its pinout, its power envelope, its thermal profile. When that SKU gets constrained, you can't just drop in a substitute. The whole board is affected.

That's why a processor shortage in 2026 looks less like "delayed orders" and more like "redesigns no one budgeted for."

The fix isn't technical. It's planning. Programs with forecast visibility and committed inventory are moving forward. Programs without it are renegotiating timelines.

For ISR, autonomy, sensor fusion, and automated target recognition, waiting for a cloud round-trip isn't a viable option. Which is why the inference stage, the one most AI vendors gloss over, is the one that decides whether the system actually delivers in the field.
