When people hear "virtual production" or "AI filmmaking," they often picture a computer creating an entire video with a single prompt.
That's not how professional workflows work.
For our sketch comedy productions at Hot Cheap Comedy, AI is just one tool in a much larger filmmaking process. We still begin with writing, directing, lighting, camera work, and performances. From there, we use green screens, virtual sets, compositing, motion graphics, and AI-assisted background generation to create environments that would otherwise be too expensive or time-consuming to build.
The result isn't replacing filmmaking. It's expanding what's possible for independent creators.
For comedy in particular, this opens the door to scenes that would have once required large studio budgets, while still keeping the actors, timing, and performances at the center of the story. Every background, transition, and visual effect still has to be planned, edited, color matched, and refined before it ever reaches the audience.
Technology changes. Storytelling doesn't.
If you're curious about how virtual studios are changing the way comedy is produced, I wrote more about the process here:

And yes... before anyone asks, the videos are meant to make people laugh. It's comedy, not a documentary.
