Welcome to Coffee and Context, where the coffee is hot and so are the takes.

Starting off with a big one: incident management hasn't changed in 20 years.

Garet Douglas disagrees. The fundamentals still hold, but the systems around them have changed. One issue can now set off alerts across infrastructure, applications, networks, and cloud services, leaving teams to sort through the noise before they can start fixing the problem.

Watch the conversation between Garet and Peyton Gillette, then dig into the Forrester report for the research behind it: https://ow.ly/NkHY50ZHxbn

When AI gets cheaper, more teams can afford to use it. That creates a very practical question for IT: what happens when those new workloads hit your environment?

This month’s AI news digs into that question.

📣 Spiceworks looks at why old capacity-planning habits are struggling to keep up.
📣 A podcast conversation with Russell Smith explores what AI changes for the teams running IT.
📣 The Deep View's analysis of Z. ai’s Ox Alpha looks at what lower model costs could mean for enterprise adoption.

Benchmarks show what a model can do. IT has to decide whether it can support the workload and keep the service reliable as usage grows, without letting costs run away.

In 2003, August 26 fell on a Tuesday. Not just any Tuesday, but the Tuesday the Sobig.F worm slowed about 15,000 computers across 300 U.S. attorneys' offices.

People could tell something was wrong. Systems were sluggish, and network traffic was crawling. Figuring out the cause was harder. Infected machines were reaching out to other systems for instructions, adding another layer to the incident.

Does the situation sound familiar?

Someone says, "The network is slow," but the problem could be an endpoint, a server, an application, or a dependency somewhere outside the environment.

Incident response has gotten harder since 2003. Automation can spread a bad change in minutes. Cloud services bring more dependencies into the picture. The tools meant to protect and monitor systems can even create problems of their own.

A new Forrester report, *Incident Management Has Outgrown Its Playbook*, looks at what this means for operations teams and why traditional incident practices are falling behind the environments they support.

If your incident process was built for a simpler world, the report is worth a look: https://ow.ly/REUk50ZEZa5

Markel is taking a measured approach to AI-assisted IT operations: strengthen the operational foundation first, then expand automation where the process proves ready.

With LogicMonitor and Edwin AI, the team has improved visibility across its global hybrid environment while Edwin AI dashboards show a 79% reduction in alert noise and an 81% alert deduplication rate.

The next step is using stronger operational context to support more consistent incident review and reduce routine manual work.

Today in IT history: In 1947, Hewlett-Packard incorporated with a focus on helping engineers measure and understand technology.

That same instinct looks a little different 79 years later. The need has expanded across servers, storage, networks, power, temperature, CPU utilization, and thousands of other signals.

HP’s enterprise infrastructure legacy continues through HPE, while our platform helps IT teams monitor the HPE technology still supporting critical infrastructure today.

Over almost eight decades, the technology changed, but the need to understand what it's doing didn't. The scale of the challenge grew with it.

For IT teams today, that means maintaining visibility across increasingly complex infrastructure.

A 313% ROI over three years puts a harder number behind the AI-in-IT-operations debate.

In a Forrester Total Economic Impact™ study, a composite organization using Edwin AI saw value from reduced alert noise, faster root cause analysis, and more engineering time redirected to higher-value work.

For IT leaders, the bar for AI is moving from adoption to measurable return.

Your incident response team already works in Slack, Teams, and ServiceNow. Edwin AI now works there too.

Its headless architecture brings investigation, root cause analysis, impact context, and recommended next steps directly into the workflows teams already use. So responders can stay in the tools they already use and get the context they need without jumping around.
