Happy International Women’s Day! I’m a little late but I wanted to participate in the challenge. One day I’ll learn how to do cute little animations with the stars and lettering, but that day isn’t today. 😅 Past my bedtime. 🥱

I had the opportunity to do some work for “Share the Love” campaign in February. Those who donated by purchasing certain items got this cute little sticker I designed.

My daughter loves putting stickers on her shirt so she was my little model. (last pic).

✨ New branding ✨ I reworked my branding after taking some months to ruminate over it. The previous logo just didn’t feel or look right. I initially wanted it to have that summer lemonade stand/beach vibe and decided to revisit some earlier roughs with juicy lettering that communicated that better. It’s hard to do branding for yourself and I can’t even tell you how many times I went back and forth on colors. 😅 I find it so much easier to do branding for clients than for myself. But I’m happy with how it turned out. Sometimes if designs don’t feel right and you’ve been staring at it for too long and going in circles it’s good to take a break and revisit it later with fresh eyes.

Reflecting back on 2023 with some of my favorite work I’ve done this year. I didn’t post very much because I’ve been focusing on other things. It’s been a year of trial and error and self-discovery. But I feel like it’s helped me narrow my focus and get more clear on my goals. Here are some of my takeaways from this year:

✨ Renamed and rebranded my lettering biz to Freshly Made Type.

✨ Landed a new awesome client recently that aligns more with the type of work I want to be doing. Lost/dropped other clients that don’t align with my goals and skills to open up time for better work that I enjoy more.

✨ Studied UX design and completed an online certificate (not lettering related but still something I’m proud of accomplishing). My husband recently completed an 18-month app dev program so we can create apps together.

✨ Realized my heart is with lettering still and made me want to pursue it more and make that dream a reality in 2024.

✨ Increased sales from my font Yuletide that I created two years ago. Want to focus more on creating new fonts this next year.

👎 Had three straight months of practically zero income from client work (because of loss of those other clients). It was rough but allowed me to finish the UX program and free up time for better clients in the future.

👎 Didn’t post consistently on Instagram once again and had very little engagement with the few things I did post. But it’s ok because none of the client work I get even comes from Instagram.

👎 Did not finish my new website by the end of the year as intended. Need to get more clear on my goals and brand before doing my website.

👎 Didn’t complete the Lettering Style Challenge this year but I’m planning on creating stickers to sell from those designs plus new ones next year.

Day 20 ~ Graffiti ~ Haleakala

Haleakala National Park is located on the island of Maui. Haleakala is a massive volcano that stands at an elevation of 10,023 feet and dominates the landscape of the park. The volcano is considered to be one of the most sacred places in Hawaiian culture.

I’ve always loved Graffiti and have played around with the style a bit in Procreate since I can’t go Graffiti-ing actual walls. 😆I used some gradients, drips and splatters for added effects. I didn’t want to go too overboard with it because it’s so easy to just get carried away and do too much. I had fun with it though.

Day 19 ~ Sans Serif ~ Saguaro

Here’s some simple clean sans serif type for Saguaro. I added little spikes on the letters because obviously cacti are spikey. 😅 And rounded the crossbars of the A’s to mimic their curved upward arms. 🌵

Saguaro National Park is in southern Arizona. Its 2 sections are on either side of the city of Tucson. The park is named for the large saguaro cactus, native to its desert environment.

Day 18 ~ Swashes ~ Acadia

I’ve decided to scale back over halfway through this challenge and just focus on the lettering and leave the illustrations/badges aside for the sake of time and my own sanity.😆 My 3 year old daughter has recently decided she has to go potty every 5 minutes from bedtime until midnight, the only time I have to work on these. I just really only have about an hour to work on it at night. And I have some freelance work too. I do want to try and keep up on this challenge and practice lettering daily and improve my lettering/develop my style. I just need to try and simplify and take some of the pressure off. I still want to do these sticker badges and also make posters to sell on my Etsy shop. Later I’ll finish the illustrations and do the rest of the National Parks.
