SEED was Sun Microsystems Engineering's world wide employee mentoring program, 2001-2010. SEED program participants were expected to rise to the top of Sun Engineering's individual contributor or management ranks. Greg Papadopoulos (Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of Research and Development) was SEED's executive sponsor. SEED was managed by Katy Dickinson Director, Business

Process Architecture, in the Chief Technologist's Office. In more than 30 terms, there were over 1,000 SEED participants and over 500 mentors World-wide. Over 70% of SEED mentors were Vice Presidents, Fellows, Distinguished Engineers, or Directors. During ten years, the SEED program had a proven track record of strong diversity, very high satisfaction, high regard by management, and high retention. SEED participants as a group earned more promotions and higher performance ratings than Sun overall. Sun Microsystems (and SEED) transitioned to being part of Oracle in 2010.

Become a Certified Mentor?
Mentor certification establishes a current public record of successful and effective mentoring and growth, and demonstrates a sustained pattern of leadership and career development.

“Having a professional quality certification brings a level of credibility to my mentoring experience which has been very helpful – in particular when offering training about mentoring at a technical conference in my field. Not only did it help me to be very specific about successful mentoring criteria, multiple colleagues are now interested in developing their skills and getting certified as well.” - Larissa Brown Shapiro (Senior Program Manager, at Mozilla)

Mentoring Standard celebrates mentors with deep experience, who have done the work of helping people to achieve their goals and grow their careers. Mentor Certification documents and celebrates your past and ongoing mentoring accomplishments – it does not require you to join a new mentoring program or take additional training.

For several months, Everwise has been developing “Mentoring in a Box” materials, to present best practices and structure for small mentoring programs. Some of the content is original to me, other materials were created by the Everwise team. Other sources include TechWomen Emerging Leader Seham Al Jaafreh (from Jordan), and material adapted from my Sun Labs Technical Report “Sun Mentoring: 1996-2009”. In light of Sun's current circumstances, here is an update of what I think is my most popular blog entry: "After the RIF notice, before you leave" (15 January 2009).
