In April 2024, we reported how Apple was warning people of mercenary attacks via its threat notification system. At the time it warned users in 92 countries. In a new round, Apple is now warning users in 98 countries of potential mercenary spyware attacks. The message sent to the affected users says:

“Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID.”

In the same message, Apple says that it is very likely that the person in question is being specifically targeted because of what they do or who they are. And, although there is a certain margin of error, the user should take this warning seriously.

Mercenary spyware is used by governments to target people like journalists, political activists, and similar targets, and involves the use of sophisticated tools like Pegasus. Pegasus is one of the world’s most advanced and invasive spyware tools, known to utilize zero-day vulnerabilities against mobile devices. ~ Pieter Arntz via Malwarebytes

If secure and encrypted document creation and management is a big consideration for your organization, then you may want to look at Proton Docs as a possible option for your team.

According to Joshua Hawkins at Lifehacker the new service from Proton Mail's Proton Drive offers users end-to-end encryption without the snooping and data scraping going on in Google Docs ...

"Proton has built its entire business around the motto of “privacy first,” and that extends to the company’s latest software offerings, too. Docs in Proton Drive includes complete end-to-end encryption—down to your cursor movements—which means nobody, not even Proton, can track what you’re doing in your documents. They're locked down before they even reach Proton's servers."

Docs in Proton Drive and Google Docs have major differences, so here's when it might make sense to use one over the other.

Christopher Harper over at Tom's Guide reports on a new password breach that may take the record for the largest theft of user passwords:

"The most significant password leak in history occurred on the Fourth of July. This leak, dubbed RockYou2024 by its original poster, “ObamaCare,” on a leading hacking forum, compiles 9,948,575,739 unique passwords into plain text. This is 9.9—almost 10 billion passwords that have been leaked, so we’re looking at an attack on a truly unprecedented scale here [h/t Cybernews]."

Time to break out the password manager and reset your passwords ... or shift over to passkeys.

The leak dropped on the 4th of July. Here's what you need to know

Kurt Knutsson at CyberGuy has a new blog post out discussing a flaw in Windows that allows hackers worm into your computer via your WiFi connection ...

"Microsoft labeled the vulnerability as CVE-2024-30078 with a maximum severity of 'Important.' It is described as a 'Windows Wi-Fi Driver Remote Code Ex*****on Vulnerability.' If we break down these terms, you’d understand that the flaw allows an attacker within Wi-Fi range of your computer to send a specially crafted network packet to the target and exploit your PC.

"This vulnerability is dangerous because it can bypass all security checks, doesn’t need special permissions, and requires no action from the user. For example, imagine you’re at a cafe using their public Wi-Fi. You’d expect some security measures to protect your device. But with this vulnerability, an attacker could easily sneak malware onto your laptop without you knowing."

Check out the full article to make sure you are taking all the precautions possible. Just because Microsoft has said the problem is fixed is no reason to let your guard down.

A new security issue was found in the Windows Wi-Fi driver that let hackers break into your PC through Wi-Fi.
