🌀 Tropical Storm Edouard is approaching the upper Texas coast, with the center expected to reach the northwestern Gulf Coast later today before moving inland across southeast Texas tonight.

Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft found Edouard strengthening this morning, with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph. Additional strengthening is forecast before landfall, and the storm could approach hurricane strength before moving inland.

As Edouard moves inland, the primary hazards include damaging winds, storm surge along portions of the Texas and Louisiana coast, heavy rainfall capable of producing flash flooding, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.

As August comes to a close, the tropics are staying busy.

This animation shows forecast wind data across the eastern Pacific and Gulf of Mexico for August 31.

🌀 Hurricane Karina remains a powerful Category 4 hurricane over the eastern Pacific with sustained winds near 130 mph, while gradually beginning a weakening trend.

🌧️ Farther east, another disturbance south of southwestern Mexico is becoming more organized and is expected to develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm soon.

⚠️ In the Gulf of Mexico, Potential Tropical Cyclone Five is approaching the Texas and Louisiana coast. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect, with impacts expected to include strong winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

Weather data starts long before a forecast appears on your screen.

The accuracy of every observation depends not only on the instruments themselves, but also on where they're installed. A weather station placed too close to buildings, pavement, or trees can introduce biases that affect everything from local measurements to weather model initialization.

In our latest article, we explore the science behind weather station siting, including WMO standards, common siting mistakes, and the importance of proper placement for reliable weather data collection.

🐶 Happy National Dog Day from Wet Dog Weather!

Meet the pack behind the platform.

When we founded Wet Dog Weather, we wanted a brand that would stand out, so we gave our products dog-themed names. Boxer, Terrier, Labrador, and St. Bernard have become more than product names. They're part of our identity.

The names have done exactly what we hoped they would. They catch people's attention at weather conferences and often spark conversations with visitors who stop by our booth to learn more about what we build.

Fun fact: there are actually more cat people than dog people on our team. 😸

Happy National Dog Day to everyone celebrating today! 🐾

This summer, three student interns took on the challenge of building AI weather applications using real weather data and artificial intelligence.

The results?

🌩️ Storm Pointer: An AI storm chasing dashboard that brings forecasting and decision-support tools into one intuitive workspace.

🎣 FishCast: An AI fishing weather app that helps anglers understand how weather conditions influence fishing success.

✈️ RuffRide: An AI aviation weather app designed to help pilots better understand turbulence and flying conditions.

During our Summer AI Intern Showcase, each intern presented their final project, shared lessons learned in AI-assisted software development, and demonstrated how meteorology and technology can work together to solve real-world challenges.

Watch all three presentations in this post and learn more about what they built.

Relief is finally arriving across western Europe.

After weeks of intense heat, a cold front is sweeping in from the Atlantic, bringing widespread rain and much cooler air. Some locations are seeing temperatures drop by more than 15°C (27°F) compared to last week, with daytime highs returning to a more typical 18°C to 20°C (64°F to 68°F).

For many areas, especially across the UK, France, and parts of Spain, this marks the first meaningful rainfall in weeks. While the cooler weather may feel like a shock after such an extreme summer, it's welcome news for drought-stricken landscapes and communities.

This animation shows the shift in both temperatures and rainfall as the pattern changes across Europe.

The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) includes a lot of useful forecast data, but one feature that's easy to overlook is NDFD weather codes.

These codes provide a simple way to summarize forecast conditions, making them useful for map displays, application workflows, and location-based weather queries. We also take a look at the surprisingly interesting way they're stored in GRIB2 files.

If you've ever wondered what those weather codes represent or how to use them in your own applications, this post walks through the details.

Learn how NDFD weather codes simplify forecast data, making it easier to display conditions, query weather, and build smarter weather applications.

🌞🌑🌧️ Not the view eclipse chasers were hoping for in parts of Iceland today.

Clouds and rain are keeping many observers from seeing totality, a reminder that weather is often the biggest wildcard for any eclipse.

Fortunately, conditions across much of Spain are much more favorable, giving eclipse watchers there an excellent chance to experience today's event.

Sometimes the forecast matters just as much as the astronomy.

A powerful bow echo is sweeping across parts of eastern Iowa, northern and central Illinois, and northwest Indiana this morning, bringing a dangerous threat of widespread damaging winds.

This fast-moving line of thunderstorms can produce wind gusts up to 75 mph, which can down trees, damage power lines, and cause scattered power outages. Isolated hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible. In addition, some of the strongest storms are producing rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour, leading to Flash Flood Warnings as water quickly accumulates on roads and in low-lying areas.

The storm complex is expected to continue moving east and southeast through the morning, and additional severe thunderstorm watches may be needed farther east as it progresses.
