Aloft is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month as we feature Aloftean stories and families from across the country.
Today we feature Edys Fernandez. Edys immigrated to the United States with his family from Cuba as a refugee in 1980. He shared the impact of his culture and how it has shaped his perspective on life: "I grew up in Miami which has become one of the largest Hispanic multicultural cities in the United States. I was exposed to a melting pot of Caribbean, Central, and South American cultures and traditions. From the music to the food, to even the Spanish language (every country has its slang and way of speaking that is unique). It was fun listening and learning more about my Hispanic heritage on the streets of Little Havana, Miami. I loved watching the elders play dominoes. The impact my culture has made on my life is the lesson that FAMILY AND COMMUNITY are everything."
