Jeff Porter, Senior Director, BI Practice Manager, shares the importance of the update in Power BI integration with Excel and what it means for access to sensitive and important data:

"Power BI announced an update to how their information protection sensitivity labels integrate better with Excel. https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-data-protection-updates/
I’ve always been a supporter of providing broad access to data inside an organization. Too often I have worked on projects with delays that can last weeks just trying to get access approval for data within their own division. While its critical to know who is using data and how, if you really want the magic of digital transformation, you need lots of people getting creative with your data.

Share data broadly in your organization, but also make sure you empower your employees to do the right thing with that data. Every company should have data training so everyone understands what it means to safely & ethically collect & use data. This new Power BI feature is a first step, but great to see the connections across Power BI & Excel. If you set the sensitivity level of data (i.e. ‘Confidential’) in Power BI, not only will users see that when using the report, but if they connect to the dataset using Excel, it will also show there. Even an update to the sensitivity level will pass through to Excel the next time data is refreshed. If you want your users to treat your data appropriately, you need to tell them what kind of data it is.

There are still a lot of ways that data can leak out of your systems, especially if you allow for export directly from your Power BI reports. We’ve all seen a lot of ‘spreadmarts’ with critical data managed out of complex spreadsheets using macros to combine and transform data. It will be great to see this new feature spread across all Microsoft products & online services to help inform everyone how to be creative, but also very careful, with their organizations data."

As more facilities allow people inside, personal safety is at the top of mind. Jeff Crow, Engagement Manager, shares a resource on how to increase safety.
"We hear a lot these days about the “new normal” and how the pandemic has impacted our personal lives. We also see this impact in the business world. Facilities Managers have always had the safety of customers, employees and vendor suppliers as their top priority. However, in light of Covid-19 the significance is even greater. Personal safety through the use of masks, hand sanitizer, temperature checks and contact tracing are great micro steps to help stop the spread of the virus. Within a facility, a greater factor has to do with the quality of the indoor air. Most buildings are designed with energy efficiency in mind but for today’s reality HVAC systems need to be modified to increase air circulation. This strategy must also be paired with new technologies in filtration and disinfection. Learn more about how to make buildings safer here: https://lnkd.in/dbFSiKB "

In addition to frequent cleaning and disinfection, building managers must act as quickly and efficiently as possible to achieve a particular level of IAQ.

Leslie Aal, Privacy and Security Engagement Manager, sheds some light on the recent talks of banning the social media app TikTok and Microsofts recent move towards purchasing the platform:

When my teenage daughter told me that "Trump was going to shut down TikTok". I was somewhat dismissive thinking that it was a dramatic teenage rumor. Later I found out that it wasn't a rumor at all. Now, I'm not on TikTok so I can't comment on how great or horrible it is. What I do know are the issues that lead to Microsoft potentially purchasing them.
The main concern seems to stem from the country controlling the information, Washington doesn't like China controlling information on US citizens. To be honest, Trump said he would shut down a number for China based apps, TikTok just seems to be the largest one which makes them the largest target. Keep in mind that we are only talking about Microsoft potentially purchasing their US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand markets, the China market would still remain in ByteDance's control. ByteDance is the company who currently owns TikTok.
So what would Microsoft do if they bought TikTok? Microsoft has so many datacenters that they are in the unique position to recognize data sovereignty and keep personal data in the country of origin. Which would appease Washington and offer more privacy for US citizens. What still seems to be unclear is if they would collect any less information than what is currently being collected. Guess we'll all just have to wait and see:

Microsoft confirmed that it has been discussing an acquisition of the trendy app in the U.S. and other countries.
