Windows 7 has reached its 10th birthday, and Microsoft will stop supporting it after January 14, 2020. That means no new security updates after 1/14/20, and that means Windows 7 will become progressively more dangerous to use as time goes on. Unless your Windows 7 computer is air-gapped, i.e. disconnected from all networks, then it will become a progressively softer target for malicious software infections.

You don't want to be a soft target! You want to move away from Windows 7, to Windows 10. I can get you there safely. But we really should address this before January 14! Reach out, if you have any questions.

How do you tell if your Mac apps are 32-bit or 64-bit? If you've already moved to macOS 10.15 Catalina, your 32-bit apps simply won't start. If you're running an earlier version (Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, etc.,) use System Report to locate 32-bit apps. Here's how:

Click Apple Menu > About this Mac > System Report

On the left column, under Software, click Applications. Depending on the number of apps you have, this might take awhile to display.

The applications table that displays has a column labelled 64-bit(Intel) containing a Yes or a No. Yes means 64-bit. You can click that column heading to group together all your 32-bit apps and all your 64-bit apps.

The 32-bit apps won't work under Catalina.

A word of warning to my Mac users: The latest version of macOS, Catalina, supports 64-bit applications only. Earlier macOS versions would run both 64-bit and 32-bit apps. Mojave would show a warning when you launched a 32-bit app, notifying you that you should be seeking out a 64-bit version of this app from its vendor. What does all this mean? If you're using a 32-bit application, such as older versions of Adobe Acrobat, you won't be able to run them after you move to macOS Catalina! If you depend on 32-bit apps, postpone jumping to Catalina until you can obtain 64-bit updates to your vital apps!

How do you know if an app is 64-bit or 32-bit? See my next post!

Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 users can upgrade to Windows 10 for free through July 29, 2016. After that, Windows 10 Home costs $119, and Windows 10 Pro costs $199.

I recommend upgrading, but doing it safely! The upgrade process can fail, and might leave your computer unable to boot up. Then what do you do?

Let me help you get to Windows 10, safely and quickly, before Microsoft begins charging for Windows 10. Call me at 619-318-5431 for a complimentary consultation.

I use Carbonite Online Backup, in addition to a desktop backup drive. Why both? To safeguard against fire and theft, which would take out both my computer AND my backup drive. Then why use a backup drive at all? Because restoring thousands of files (hundreds of gigabytes) from an online backup service can take days to complete. (I've been there. You don't want to be there!) Here's a link for a free two-month trial of the Carbonite service. If you'd like help setting it up, I'm here to help.

Thanks to your friend's referral, you can try Carbonite Home FREE. And if you decide to buy, we'll give you 2 bonus months with your subscription.*
