As many may know already, the principal is called . It’s been around under various names and in various formats literally for millennia. I’m presenting my take on it and the version I’ve taught others for decades.
Obviously, its origins pre-date the development of Alchemy. Nevertheless, the exercise is an essential component in practical magick and, for all we know, may have originated in the Paleolithic. In that format, it’s best known as a closing or finishing exercise completing the casting of a spell. It’s the final step in sealing an enchantment.
When Alchemy adopted it, that purpose changed from sealing to connecting. Actually, rather than simply ending a spell, it morphed into an exercise to both initiate and conclude an enchantment.
Don’t worry. I’m not going to haul you into the magical weeds. Instead, I will show you how to use this exercise to connect to your world, feel you belong, and attain a sense of personal wholeness. Until you perfect this exercise, it’s best to start outside, where you can actually sit on the ground undisturbed. Plant yourself down on that ground. Sit however is comfortable for you, but you must be in actual contact with the soil.
Close your eyes and breathe gently.
Take your time, don’t rush, and relax.
When ready, breathe in deeply and exhale gently four times. Feel the separation between your lower body and the ground melt away. In the beginning, it may take more than four breaths. That’s fine; the goal is to feel the separation between your body and the soil dissipate.
Now, as you inhale, send your breath through your body into the earth below. As you exhale, bring the earth’s energy—up through your body. Visualize that energy; imagine it as a sprout of light traveling up your spine, growing in vigor with each breath.
See it sprout from the crown of your head, growing into a vibrant, many-leafed tree of light, its pendulous branches cradling you and contacting the ground.
On contact, visualize the earth’s energy and your energy forming a pulsing torus of light. Bathe yourself in that sensation. Take your time.
When ready, bring your branches up, through the crown of your head, back down your spine, into the earth below.
Open your eyes. Breathe in and exhale through your mouth four times.
Give thanks verbally to the earth, to the Nature around you.
Give respect.
Stand and go about your day.
