We made an ad.

There's a rotary phone in it, which tells you roughly how long this idea has been around: when the job actually matters, you call someone who does it for a living.

Still true. The phone just looks different now.

Quick check: is there someone in your business whose job secretly includes being the bridge between two systems?

Retyping orders. Exporting every Monday. Copying the same thing hundreds of times a month.

That’s not a people problem. It’s a missing connection. And retyping things by hand has a mistake rate that isn’t zero, no matter how good Dave is.

Two requests we’d happily take today:

“Can you move this button a bit to the left?”
“Can you build us a customer portal that talks to our inventory system?”

Same answer to both. Yes.

Some jobs take an afternoon. Some take a few months and a whiteboard the size of a wall. We take both seriously, partly because the small job is how a lot of good working relationships start, and partly because we will absolutely notice if that button is two pixels off.

Small fix, big build, or something you can’t quite describe yet. Tell us what’s going on and we’ll tell you honestly what it takes.

Standing offer, same as the last one. Describe the part of your business that eats time and causes arguments, and we’ll tell you what we think.

Sometimes the answer is a piece of custom software. Sometimes it’s connecting two things you already pay for. Sometimes it’s that the process itself is the problem and no amount of code will save it, which is not what an agency is supposed to say, but there it is.

No charge, no deck, no sitting through a presentation. Just a straight read on whether this is worth building and roughly what it would take.

Anyone can build what you describe. The useful bit is working out whether what you described is the thing that’s actually wrong.

Often the request and the problem are two different things. "We need a dashboard" sometimes means the numbers aren’t trusted. "We need an app" sometimes means the website is painful on a phone. "We need to automate this" sometimes means two teams disagree about who owns a step.

So we spend real time at the start asking boring questions about how the work actually moves through your business. It’s less exciting than opening a code editor. It’s also the difference between software that gets used and software that gets tolerated.

When two systems don’t connect, the connection doesn’t disappear. It just becomes a person.

Someone exports a file on Monday. Someone retypes an order into the system that actually fulfils it. Someone checks whether the number on the website matches the number in the back office, because last time it didn’t.

None of it shows up as a line item. It shows up as a job that’s quietly less pleasant than it should be, and as the occasional mistake that nobody can quite explain.

Connecting the two is usually smaller work than people expect.

Somebody invented a workaround once, under pressure, to get through a bad week.

It worked. So it stayed. New people were trained on it. It got a name. Now it’s just how things are done here, and nobody remembers it was supposed to be temporary.

The tell is how you describe it to someone new. If it takes more than a sentence, and you find yourself saying "you just have to know", it stopped being a workaround a while ago.

Worth asking what it would look like if the thing simply worked the way you’d describe it out loud.

There’s one in nearly every business we meet. A spreadsheet that started as a quick way to keep track of something, and somewhere along the way became load-bearing.

It has rules now. Tabs nobody opens. A column that has to stay in that exact order or the whole thing stops working. One person understands it properly and everyone else sends them a message.

It isn’t a stupid thing to have built. It solved a real problem on a day when nothing else would have. It just wasn’t designed for the size you are now.

That’s usually the moment to turn it into something that can take the weight.

We’re Pure Code Digital. We build websites, mobile apps and business software, and we have one rule about all three: it should look like somebody cared, and it should still work when nobody’s watching.

Those two things come apart more often than you’d think. There are beautiful sites that fall over on a phone. There’s software that technically does the job and makes everyone slightly miserable every time they open it. Neither one is finished.

Over the next few weeks we’re posting about the less glamorous half of that — the business problems that arrive disguised as software problems. The spreadsheet doing a job it was never meant to do. The systems that don’t talk to each other. The workaround that quietly became the process.

Starting with the one nearly every business has and nobody mentions.

One of the quiet reasons projects go sideways: you never actually find out who's working on your thing.

You talk to a salesperson. Then a project manager. Then the work happens somewhere you can't see, by people you've never met, and every question gets relayed through two other humans before it comes back slightly wrong. Telephone, but with an invoice attached.

We're small on purpose. You talk to the people building it. Ask why something works a certain way and you get an answer from the person who decided it, not a summary of an answer.

Not exactly a revolutionary business model. It's just how it ought to work.

If you're weighing a project right now, that's a fair thing to ask anybody you're considering. Who specifically is doing the work, and do I get to talk to them?
