It seems like at least once a week I talk to a business owner who believes that because they are using some type of antivirus software they are protected.

I really don’t know where this idea comes from.

Pick any one of these products and they will do a lot to keep your systems safe.

Once a vulnerability is discovered and verified, you can count on it being shared all over the darkest parts of the web.

Now the antivirus you have might be able to detect it.

Well, according to CNN there are nearly one million new threats released each day.

Did you know that the city of Atlanta was compromised and their data was held ransom?

Here is where the big disconnect is happening. Most small businesses think there's nothing they have that would be of interest to hackers.

Well, how much is your data worth on the black market?

Names, email, phone numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, bank accounts...

New Computer?

This is when your vulnerability is prime!

There are so many ways of getting an infection that exposes your private information to the outside world - its almost impossible to count. Most infections happen when the system is new! Mostly from installing programs you used to do.

Here are the most basic ways - Let me know if any of them are familiar!

#1 - Java Updates -
Many of us have this annoying updates nagging us constantly it seems. This is because these two essential programs are necessary to run video, games, advertisements. All pivotal to mosts end users online experience. The reason these are updated so frequently is because they are still so vulnerable due to the complexity of the content.

If you don't update java for example - your system will be more vulnerable. If you do update Java - it prompts to install Ask Toolbar. Thus changing your webpage & search results. Seemingly bringing you to more infections. The key is to keep these programs up to date always & on time. Most of the time once a vulnerability gets exploited - it shuts down the update process.

The update process keeps the developers patches installing to keep the software secure after new exploits are made. The key to circumvent this all is to is to keep it up to date.

Yet one must remember to uncheck (ask toolbar) during installation of Java updates!
