Clarity Is Heavy Metal MarketingYou know what I love about a great Disturbed song? It doesn’t waste time. It punches you in the chest from the first note.

That’s how your marketing should feel.

Not aggressive. But confident. Clear. Direct.

Most websites read like smooth jazz. Safe. Soft. Forgettable.

That’s not what gets results.

StoryBrand gives you the tools to write messaging that cuts through the noise. And in my Small Group Marketing Cohort, I teach business owners how to do just that.

If you’re tired of playing quiet background music in a world full of distortion and feedback, let’s turn it up.

I’ll help you find your message—and make sure it hits hard.

What Motorcycle Crashes and Marketing Funnels Have in CommonBack to that brick wall I hit at age 9…

I didn’t see it coming. And no one told me to hit the brakes.

I see business owners running their marketing the same way. Speeding ahead without a clear path, no plan, and no warning before the crash.

They’ve got ads running, social content going out, emails half-written—but no real structure holding it all together.

The StoryBrand framework doesn’t just help with messaging. It gives you a strategy.

Inside the Small Group Marketing Cohort, we build messaging and then put it into a clear plan. Landing pages. Lead generators. Email sequences. Everything working together.

No more crashing into the wall.

Want to build a funnel that actually works? Reach out. I’d love to help.

Bella, Branding, and the Power of Simplicity

I have a Boston Terrier named Bella. She doesn’t do complexity. She responds to tone, clarity, and one-word commands.

Turns out, people aren’t that different.

If your message is too clever, too long, or too vague, people don’t respond.

Customers don’t need ten paragraphs. They need to know what you offer, how it helps, and what to do next.

StoryBrand teaches us to keep it simple and clear.

That’s what we work on in the Small Group Marketing Cohort—writing words that get results, not awards.

If your website sounds like it’s trying too hard, maybe it is. Let’s fix it.

What My Marriage Taught Me About Messaging

My wife and I have been married for 34 years. That kind of history teaches you a few things.

One of the biggest?

You have to communicate in a way that makes the other person feel heard and seen.

The same is true in marketing.

Most business owners are so focused on what they want to say, they forget to think about what their customers need to hear.

Your website isn’t about you.
Your emails aren’t about you.
Your brand story isn’t about you.

It’s about them. Their life. Their goals. Their struggles.

That’s what I love about StoryBrand. It gives you a way to center the customer, not your company.

In my Small Group Marketing Cohort, we focus on this kind of clarity. Not just writing better copy, but building better relationships.

Want to learn how to write marketing that makes people feel seen? I’ll show you how.

I Used to Sell “Solutions” No One Needed

At one point in my life, I was an unlicensed pharmaceutical rep. I’ll let you imagine how that worked.

I learned something during those years:
If the person doesn’t believe they have a problem, they’re not buying. No matter how great the solution is.

That stuck with me.

Fast forward to now, and I see business owners doing the same thing. Selling answers to questions no one is asking. Talking about features instead of problems.

That’s why I coach clients to start with the pain. It’s not manipulative. It’s empathetic. It’s saying, “I see what you’re struggling with, and I know how to help.”

The StoryBrand framework gives us the structure to do that.

In my Small Group Marketing Cohort, we work together to name the problem, clarify the message, and create a marketing plan that actually works.

Let me know if you want in. It’s a lot more legit than my old gig.

The Marketing Mistake That Sounds a Lot Like Me in a Band

I’ve been playing drums for over 45 years. I love Metallica. Disturbed. Anything that shakes your ribcage.

One of the best lessons I ever learned behind a drum kit was this: don’t overplay. Serve the song.

Most business owners are overplaying. They talk too much about themselves. Their experience. Their process. Their features.

But customers don’t care about your solo. They want a rhythm they can follow.

That’s why the StoryBrand framework works. It teaches you to stop making your business the star of the show and start making your customer the hero.

I run a Small Group Marketing Cohort where we do this together. We strip back the noise and find the story that actually sells.

So if your marketing sounds more like a drum solo than a solid groove, maybe it’s time to tighten up the band.

The First Problem I Ever Faced (and What It Taught Me About Marketing)

When I was 9, I crashed a motorcycle straight into a brick wall. Spent three months in a full body cast.

I had a clear problem. And trust me, everyone around me knew what it was.

The thing is, people move when there’s a problem.

In life.

And in business.

If your marketing doesn’t clearly name the real problem your customer is facing, they’re not going to move.

They won’t take action. They won’t buy. They won’t even remember what you do.

That’s why I love using the StoryBrand framework. It forces you to clarify the problem and show how you help solve it. No fluff. No guessing.

In my Small Group Marketing Cohort, I help business owners stop writing feature lists and start telling real stories that speak to customer pain.

Because if there’s no problem, there’s no story.

And if there’s no story, there’s no sale.

Want to learn how to build a marketing message people actually respond to?

Message me. Let’s talk.

I Didn’t Always Know How to Talk About What I Do

I’ve been building websites and working in marketing for a long time now. I’ve helped nonprofits, run my own business, worked inside agencies, and coached clients through a lot of confusion.

But for years, I struggled to talk clearly about what I actually do.

I used to fall into the same trap a lot of business owners do. I’d talk about tools and tactics. I’d try to sound smart. I’d over-explain. I thought if I gave people more information, they’d be more likely to say yes.

They weren’t.

It wasn’t until I found the StoryBrand framework that things started to click. It gave me language that made sense not just to me, but to the people I wanted to help.

Now, I get to walk other business owners through the same process. It’s not magic, and it’s not always easy. But it works.

Over the next week, I’m going to share seven posts that connect some of what I’ve learned about StoryBrand and messaging to pieces of my life.

There will be some honest stories. About my marriage, my kids, Bella (my Boston Terrier), and maybe that one time I crashed a motorcycle into a brick wall when I was nine.

This isn’t about being polished. It’s about being real.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re great at what you do but struggle to explain it in a way that people get, I think you’ll relate to what’s coming.

Thanks for being here.

I’ll tell you what. I’ve come across hundreds of business owners that dream of spinning a tale as captivating as a Southern sunset. They yearn for a brand that resonates, one that people hold in high regard. The ones getting it right realize that the story told about their business holds the key to their success.

Great brands, like a sweet tea on a sweltering summer day, create a buzz that's hard to resist.

But let's set aside our business hats, momentarily, and dive into the art of storytelling.

First and foremost, it's crucial to grasp that stories follow time-honored formulas that tug at our hearts and minds. Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “Win their hearts and their thoughts will follow.”

Storytellers have been weaving these time-tested tales for generations, and they're as dependable as sweetgrass baskets crafted by local artisans.

Think of storytelling like you’d think of the Nashville music scene. The difference between a cacophony of sounds and a soul-stirring melody lies in adhering to certain principles. Similarly, a story is the artful arrangement of events in a specific order, designed to intrigue, captivate, and compel folks to lean in closer.

There are a few storytelling formulas out there. My favorite is the StoryBrand structure, a real fusion of some of the most beloved narratives. It’s the same story structure you’ll find gracing blockbuster movies like The Revenant, Hacksaw Ridge, and Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s the kind of structure that leaves audiences spellbound.

How have you used story to build your brand? What tips do you have for others?
