🚀 Coming in May: The Sky Is the Limit! 🌟

Next month, participants will take a journey beyond the clouds as we explore the wonders of space, stars, and discovery. Our May theme, “The Sky Is the Limit,” will spark curiosity and conversation through engaging activities tied to special observances like Star Wars Day, George Lucas’s Birthday, Sally Ride Day, and Space Day.

We’ll also celebrate meaningful traditions throughout the month, including Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and the Kentucky Derby — creating opportunities to share stories, memories, and laughter together.

From outer space exploration to beloved cultural celebrations, May’s programming is designed to inspire connection, creativity, and discovery.

Stay tuned — it’s going to be an out-of-this-world month! 🚀✨

💙 A Different Kind of Visit 💙

If you’ve ever felt unsure what to say during a visit with a loved one living with dementia—you’re not alone.

As the video, A Different Visit, reminds us, meaningful connection doesn’t have to come from conversation—it can come from shared activity and purpose. Dementia often affects short-term memory, making everyday small talk more difficult.
But the ability to engage, participate, and connect is still there.

Instead of focusing on “What should I talk about?”, try asking:
👉 “What can we do together?”

Simple, purposeful activities can transform a visit:
• Put family photos in order by age
• Sort silverware or match earrings
• Fold towels or organize small items

These moments:
• Reduce pressure on conversation
• Create a sense of purpose
• Support connection in a natural, comfortable way

When we shift from words to doing, visits often become more relaxed, engaging, and meaningful—for everyone.

Because connection isn’t about remembering facts—it’s about sharing the moment. 💙

🌿 Happy National Gardening Month 🌿

Horticulture therapy is more than just gardening—it’s a powerful, evidence-based approach that supports cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being.

Engaging with plants has been shown to:
• Reduce stress and anxiety
• Improve mood and overall sense of well-being
• Support fine motor skills and coordination
• Encourage focus, attention, and cognitive engagement
• Foster a sense of purpose and accomplishment

For individuals in memory care and therapeutic settings, these benefits are especially meaningful. Gardening activities tap into preserved abilities, provide sensory stimulation, and create opportunities for success and connection.

As part of our April horticulture therapy project, participants will take a closer look beneath the surface—literally. 🌱
We’ll be exploring the root systems of seedlings through a hands-on window hanger seedling, allowing participants to observe growth in real time and stay engaged with the process day by day.

🌿 Community Connect Project – April 🌿

Each month, our curriculum includes a Community Connect Project—an opportunity for participants to create something meaningful that gives back to others. Whether for friends, family, or fellow participants, these projects foster purpose, connection, and shared accomplishment.

In April, in honor of National Garden Month, we’re getting hands-on with nature 🌱
Participants will be assembling “Instant Herb Garden” kits to share as gifts—spreading a little greenery and joy within their communities.

Everyone can take part:
• Sorting and organizing seeds
• Labeling envelopes
• Assembling kits
• Getting hands in the soil
No matter the skill level, there’s a role for everyone.

It’s about more than gardening—it’s about contribution, connection, and creating something that grows beyond ourselves. 🌼

🌟 Community Spotlight: The Community Supports Network, Inc. 🌟
We’re proud to highlight The Community Supports Network (CSN)—an early adopter of our Montessori-based platform across their day centers throughout the Midwest.

CSN is an inspiring example of what’s possible when programming is truly centered on the individual. Their work empowers neurodivergent adults to build skills, gain knowledge, and develop meaningful life experiences—all while honoring personal goals and interests.

At the heart of CSN’s approach is a powerful belief: every person has value.
Their guiding principles reflect a deep commitment to dignity, inclusion, and autonomy:
• Every person deserves respect
• Every person is capable of growth through community experiences
• Every person has the right to make decisions about their own life
• Every person should experience life in natural, inclusive settings

Through personalized services, CSN supports individuals in developing their talents and improving quality of life—meeting each person where they are and helping them move forward with confidence.

We’re honored to partner with organizations like CSN that are leading the way in inclusive, person-centered support. 💙

🧠✨ Montessori for Dementia – Principle #4: Talk Less, Demonstrate More

One of the most impactful shifts in dementia care is simple: say less—and show more.
As highlighted by Dr. Cameron Camp, individuals living with dementia often retain the ability to learn through observation and imitation—even when verbal processing becomes more challenging.

When we rely heavily on spoken instructions, it can lead to confusion or frustration. But when we demonstrate actions clearly and calmly, we create a more accessible path to success.

For example:
Instead of explaining how to complete a task, try modeling it.
Instead of giving step-by-step verbal directions, show the action alongside the person.
This approach:
✔️ Reduces cognitive load
✔️ Supports procedural memory
✔️ Encourages independence and participation
✔️ Preserves dignity

At Geriactive, we support this approach by providing caregivers with prompts, scripts, and tools—helping reduce the pressure to “fill the silence” with words, and instead focus on meaningful demonstration and engagement.

In Montessori-based care, communication goes beyond language—it’s about creating success through action.

🧩💙 World Autism Awareness Day & Autism Acceptance Month 💙🧩

This April, we recognize and celebrate neurodiversity while reaffirming our commitment to inclusive, supportive programming.

GeriActive was designed with inclusion at its core—including neurodivergent adults and members of the adults with disabilities community. We believe meaningful engagement, dignity, and opportunity should be accessible to everyone.

Our approach is grounded in Montessori principles—closely aligned with occupational therapy techniques—which have proven to be highly effective across the lifespan for neurodivergent individuals. By emphasizing structure, purpose, and individualized support, these methods help unlock participation and confidence.

At GeriActive, we focus on:
• Building practical life skills
• Supporting independence through structured choice
• Creating inclusive environments where every individual can succeed

Many of our users are neurodivergent adults, and we are proud to offer tools and programming that meet them where they are—while supporting growth, autonomy, and self-expression.
