WHERE DID THE FILTER GO?

These are actual micro filters removed from a GDI injector — a new replacement on the left and the used filter on the right.

Notice what's missing.

Most GDI injectors have a small internal micro filter that serves as the injectors final line of filtration. Over time, we regularly see these filters deteriorate and come apart.

And when the filter material is no longer in the filter, there's an obvious question:

Where did it go?

We've found pieces of deteriorated filter material farther inside injectors during service. Once that filter begins coming apart, the injector not only loses its final filtration barrier — pieces of the filter itself can travel through the injector.

That's not something you want moving through the extremely small internal components of a precision GDI injector.

Can we prove that deteriorating filter material causes a particular injector to fail?

No.

But material passing through the injector may contribute to internal wear or damage, which could ultimately affect injector performance.

The filter shown here came from an Audi Continental GDI injector, and this type of deterioration is particularly common in the Audi injectors we service. But it isn't unique to Continental. We see deteriorated micro filters across GDI injector manufacturers.

That's also why, when a serviceable GDI injector has a replaceable micro filter, we replace it as part of our service.

It's a tiny component that's very easy to overlook.

Until you see what one looks like when it comes apart.

LOW-PRESSURE GDI TESTING CAN TELL THE WRONG STORY

Take a close look at these four Subaru BRZ GDI injectors.

The first photo shows all four tested at just 8 bar on a conventional port-injector flow bench. Injectors are #1– #4 from left to right.

What would you conclude?

Injector #1 clearly appears to be the low-flow injector, while #2, #3 and #4 look reasonably well matched.

Now look at the second photo.

That’s injector #1 tested against its actual GDI test plan.

❌ 180 bar: 90.3 — specification 75.8–86.4
❌ 140 bar: 33.5 — specification 26.4–29.7
❌ 65 bar: 33.7 — specification 27.9–31.3

The injector that looked like it was flowing LOW at 8 bar actually flows HIGH at every test point when tested correctly.

And here’s what happened with the complete set under the proper test plan:

❌ #1 — HIGH
❌ #2 — HIGH
✅ #3 — PASS
❌ #4 — HIGH

At 8 bar, #2, #3 and #4 appeared to match.

In reality, only #3 passed.

This is why simply putting a GDI injector on a low-pressure flow bench and comparing graduated-cylinder volumes can be misleading.

And simply having a bench capable of higher pressure isn’t enough either.

You need to know:

What pressure? What pulse conditions? And compared against what specification?

At The Injector Shop, supported GDI injectors are tested at operating pressures using part-number-specific test plans.

Don’t just compare GDI injectors to each other. Test them against what they’re actually supposed to do.

THIS INJECTOR IS SUPPOSED TO BE CLOSED.

What you're seeing is massive injector leak-down from a Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo injector, part #2521718.

The injector is stuck open and allowing fuel to pass when it should be completely sealed. In the engine, that can mean a cylinder being flooded with raw fuel.

We've seen this failure on these Polaris RZR injectors before.

This one will go through our cleaning and service process, then we'll test it again to see whether it recovers or if the injector has suffered a permanent internal failure.

Hard-working performance engines put a lot of demand on the fuel system. Fuel injector maintenance isn't just about restoring flow — it's also about finding problems like this before they become much bigger problems.

They Look OEM. The Flow Bench Says Otherwise.

These came in as what the customer believed were OEM injectors for a 1993 Mazda Miata.

They look the part. They even carry the correct 195500-1970 part number.

And at first glance, the test results don't look bad either — the set is matched extremely well at just 1.27% deviation.

But there's a problem.

These injectors should flow approximately 210 cc/min. This set averaged only about 182 cc/min.

That's why flow matching alone doesn't tell the whole story. Four injectors can be perfectly matched to each other and still all be wrong.

We understand why inexpensive replacement injectors from large online retailers are tempting. The price difference compared with genuine OEM injectors can be substantial.

But fuel injectors are one of those places where cheap is rarely good.

The injector needs to do more than fit. It needs to deliver the correct amount of fuel.

Test data tells the real story.

What does a BMW piezo stack failure actually look like?

These two oscilloscope waveforms were captured during injector testing here at The Injector Shop.

The first shows a properly functioning piezo stack, with voltage building and being maintained through the injection event.

The second shows an internal piezo stack failure. Voltage initially builds, but then begins to collapse during the injection event as the piezo stack electrically breaks down.

This is just one way a BMW piezo injector can fail. An injector can also fail for leakage or incorrect fuel delivery, which is why electrical testing is only part of our complete testing process.

A piezo stack failure is internal to the injector. Cleaning, regeneration, or external servicing cannot repair this type of failure.

This is why we electrically test BMW piezo injectors in addition to testing actual fuel delivery and leakage performance.

Carbon contamination is extremely common on gasoline direct injection (GDI) injectors.

Because the injector tip is located directly in the combustion chamber, it is constantly exposed to heat and combustion deposits. Over time, carbon can accumulate around the injector tip and the tiny discharge holes that control the fuel spray.

The before and after photos show just how much contamination can accumulate — and what the injector tip looks like after cleaning.

But cleaning is only part of the job.

After cleaning, we test GDI injectors under high pressure to verify actual performance and make sure the injectors are delivering fuel properly and staying balanced as a set.

Sometimes the microscope tells quite a story.

BEFORE & AFTER — Yamaha F150 Fuel Injectors

This is why we don’t judge an injector set by whether the engine still runs, but I’m sure this one ran poorly.

These four Yamaha F150 injectors came in with a significant flow imbalance. In the before test, two injectors were delivering considerably less fuel than the others.

After ultrasonic cleaning and service, the after test tells a very different story — all four injectors are flowing together again with a much more consistent balance across the set.

On a multi-cylinder engine, total fuel delivery matters, but so does cylinder-to-cylinder balance. Each cylinder needs its injector doing its share of the work.

Sometimes the best diagnostic tool is simply being able to see the difference.
