Someone in your market is bidding EV charger installs at $333.

They might be winning jobs. They're not making money.

Adjacent-to-panel run with a dedicated 50A circuit, proper grounding, hardwired connection โ€” that's a 2โ€“3 hour job at anyone's real burdened rate. Before material. Before the permit.

The contractor who quotes $333 on that job is doing one of three things: forgetting what their time actually costs, skipping something important, or running a race they can't win long-term.

You don't have to race them. You just have to know your number โ€” what the job costs you to do right โ€” and be able to explain it to the homeowner who asks why yours is higher.

What does your EV charger pricing look like right now? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Projects are alive.

The homeowner walks through the framed-out kitchen and wants four more cans. The GC calls at 7am because the builder moved the panel location. The scope you bid four weeks ago hasn't matched reality since week one.

That's not a bad job โ€” that's a remodel.

The difference between a contractor who handles this without friction and one who's arguing about money at close-out isn't luck. It's whether they had a change order process built before the first wall got opened.

Green for add. Red for subtract. The homeowner sees exactly what changed and why the number moved โ€” not an invoice ambush two weeks later.

Transparent adjustments aren't nickel-and-diming. They're what happens when you're honest about how projects actually grow.

How do you handle scope changes on remodels? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Here's a number that should change how you think about every service call.

27%.

That's the percentage of homeowners who hire an electrician in a given year. For plumbers? 52%.

The average homeowner calls an electrician once every 3 to 4 years.

That means every service call you run is an at-bat that won't come around again for years. If you fix the outlet and leave with a $300 check, you've used up your window.

The contractor who walks away with a signed deposit for the panel upgrade noticed during the repair has done the same truck roll โ€” with a completely different outcome.

One shot. Use it.

What's your process for surfacing bigger work on a service call? ๐Ÿ‘‡

06/01/2026

Service call in the morning. Panel upgrade estimate at noon. New construction takeoff after dinner.

Three jobs. Same truck. Same crew. Same labor rate?

That's where the math breaks down.

A service call runs at about 50-60% billing efficiency once you factor in travel, diagnosis, and the supply run for the part you didn't have on the truck. A remodel crew on a good day hits 75%. New construction, full-day uninterrupted workflow? You can push 90%.

If you're applying the same rate to all three, one of those jobs is subsidizing the others. It's almost always the service call.

What does your service call rate actually work out to after you account for efficiency? ๐Ÿ‘‡
