Before smartphones, and long before unlimited calling and texting, there were payphones.

If you needed a ride home after hanging out with friends, you could place a collect call from a payphone. A recording would prompt you to say your name so the caller could determine whether they wanted to accept the charges.

Naturally, kids figured out they could skip saying their name and use those few seconds to blurt out their entire message: "Mom, we're done skating! Pick me up from Kevin's house!"

Mom would decline the call and go pick you up at Kevin's.

Technology has come a long way, but there's something fun about remembering the little tricks that kept us connected.
