An NBC post feels right after, I'm proud as a peacock to say, I started an Ad Sales internship with the company last week! 🦚
The original peacock from 1956 (slide 2) was adopted in celebration of NBC's increase in color programming. Back then it was just called the "Bird" and the peacock essentially functioned as a marketing tool for NBC's owner, RCA. Since RCA made color television sets, the peacock logo was used to hopefully get people to purchase one for their home. 📺
The peacock underwent a few changes over the years, and what we have on slide 1 is the iconic peacock we've known and loved since 1986. This iteration of the peacock was the first time NBC represented itself solely with the bird image, and this time the peacock's head was now flipped to the right, because obviously we want to look to the future and not the past. Whereas past peacocks had 11 feathers, the current logo only has six, which represent NBC's six divisions. Another cool element is that the bottom of the peacock resembles a lens shutter. 📸
The current peacock incorporates all six primary and secondary colors in the RYB color palette, and it was designed by branding firm Chermayeff & Geismar. You may know them for other logos including Mobil, National Geographic, Discovery +, and State Farm. 🌟
