St. Dominic, Breese, IL - The first church of St. Dominic was blessed by Bishop Henry Juncker of the Diocese of Alton on October 18th, 1858. It was a 40’ x 60’ building that stood directly behind the current church. At the time, about eighty Catholic families lived in Breese and the immediate area.

During the next ten years, a large number of German immigrants settled in the area. Bishop Juncker recognized the need, and granted permission, to build a larger church.

Using local stone, lime, and sand, a new Gothic style church was completed in December 1869. It is the same building that unites the 900 family faith community today.

Its exciting to see a community rally together to build and restore — in a way that is reverent toward tradition and beauty. In an age when community can seem to be fading away, and tradition is too often replaced with trends, this is a genuinely encouraging scene — and a very Midwest one, in a special sort of way. Well done Saint Agnes!!!

When Bloomsdale's pastor held the winning ticket, he didn't buy a new car or book a trip. He funded a beautiful restoration of his parish church — carried out by the hands of his own parishioners.

Old Saint Vincent's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau

In 1825 Rev. John Timon, a newly ordained Vincentian priest, was assigned to work in Perry and Cape Girardeau counties. He travelled on horse-back ministering to Catholics in this area. Father Timon presented to the bishop the need of a church in Cape Girardeau.

In a warehouse belonging to Don Louis Lorimier, the Spanish Commandant, Father Timon celebrated Mass in 1833. This warehouse, near Lorimier’s home, the Red House, became the first temporary church.

Both Catholics and Protestants attended Father Timon’s services. The congregation grew quickly and a permanent structure was needed.

Five years later a cornerstone was laid in the first church by Bishop Rosati of St. Louis. The vial in the cornerstone contained the names of Pope Gregory XVI, President Martin Van Buren and Governor Lilburn Boggs. This church stood until 1850 when a violent tornado leveled it to the ground.

On the original site of the Red House, using the same native stone foundation the present St. Vincent’s was completed in 1853. The building contractor was a native of Cape Girardeau, Mr. Joseph Lansmon. The church was consecrated by Bishop Kendrick of St. Louis.

What a beautiful piece of Midwest history, and a testament of what a community can do when they come together with a common goal.

Long before Dollar General, big-box stores and endless parking lots, Midwestern communities were built around places like Bollinger Mill in Burfordville, Missouri.

Farmers brought their grain to the mill, crossed the covered bridge, and spent time with their neighbors while they waited. The mill wasn't just a business. It was part of the community — a place where people depended on one another and where commerce, work and social life naturally came together.

Originally built in 1800, like much of Missouri it was destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War. So the community rebuilt it, added the infamous covered bridge, and moved on.

The Burfordville Covered Bridge, completed in 1868, is one of only four covered bridges still standing in Missouri.

Today, the mill and bridge remain — a beautiful reminder of a time that community isn't something you drive through on your way to somewhere else.

Its something you belong to.
