Sockey Athletes of the Week Sponsored by AFR Insurance Sockey Agency

Senior Rudy Martinez (left) and sophomore Jayden Carry are this week’s Sockey Athletes of the Week, sponsored by AFR Insurance Sockey Agency.
Martinez ran the ball 26 times for 255 yards and 1 touchdown for a 9.8 yards per carry average against Panama. His longest run was 40 yards.
Carry had a .545 batting average on the week as she went 6 for 11 including 2 doubles and 2 home runs.
The Stigler Lady Panthers went 3-0 in games played between Aug. 24 - Aug. 27.

Baby Kyeler Leaves NICU After Long Journey

After spending a month in the neonatal intensive care unit, Kyeler Jude Varnell is finally home and doing great.

Kyeler, the son of Stigler High School Class of 2025 graduate Kamryn (Upton) Varnell and Ayden Varnell, was born July 12, 2026. He spent 1 month and 2 days in the Houston Memorial Hermann Hospital NICU before being released, marking a major milestone for his family following a difficult and uncertain pregnancy.

The Varnell family currently lives in Eufaula, but their journey had them in Houston for several months as they navigated a series of medical challenges before Kyeler’s birth.

Love and Life, Live and Grow at Almosta Farm

One look at the Johnson’s place is to know that it’s very much a homestead. The emus out front are eye-catching, charismatic ambassadors these days. But quickly one can see that it’s much more than that. In fact, it’s a fully functioning farm. Almost.

“My sister came up with (the name),” says Connie Johnson of Almosta Farm, the homesteading operation she and her husband Jeff run along with their children. All seven of them. They made their home base off of Highway 71 east of Eufaula Dam a few years ago, but have been farming and living the lifestyle their entire lives.
