WhitneyApps

WhitneyApps Building smart, fun apps (and a page) to enhance people's lives. I currently support Android devices and Amazon Fire tablets and TV.

Stephen Whitney, a Silicon Valley software development manager and an ordained Presbyterian minister started WhitneyApps in 2010 as a way of supplementing his income and keeping his skills sharp. In June 2011 when he left his position as pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in West Sacramento, CA, he decided to make it a full-time business. It's back to part-time now, but Stephen still wants to build and improve apps for you.

In 2014 I started an interactive app that teaches "traditional" long division. Now that schools are teaching Common Core "flagpole" division, would you guys be interested in an app that teaches the old school way of doing division?
Or should I update it to "flagpole"?
Let me know!

Sadly, after March 15, 2016, Barnes & Noble will no longer be selling third-party apps like mine. In case you're a Nook owner and you missed the announcement, you can find it here: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3516/session/L3RpbWUvMTQ1NzQyMzk0My9zaWQvRDdOaTdYS20%3D

I've been selling apps there for 5 years. It'll be a sad day.

All of your existing Apps previously purchased from the NOOK Store will remain in your NOOK Library and will continue to be accessible on compatible NOOK devices. This means that you will still be able to download and install previously purchased Apps from the NOOK Library on your device.

I've just submitted a new "Just for Fun" app for Amazon Fire TV and Android TV. If you're doing the Halloween thing, you may enjoy "Spooky Eyes" (which are actually cartoony cat eyes - not very scary).
You control the eyes with your remote or let them run automatically. We built it as a fun trick for trick-or-treaters - put the TV in the window and use the remote outside to make the eyes follow the kids and blink.
It's value priced at a buck!

Everything's good now (and has been for a couple of weeks). CardDroid Math Flash Cards is fixed. Just grab the free update.
We're also on Android TV and you can track up to four kids separately.
More soon...

I'm still trying to get the CardDroid Math update through Amazon's new test criteria for TV apps. They're blocking the update for all Amazon Appstore devices at this point. :-(
The good news is that I fixed a few other bugs along the way so when you get 3.3.2, it'll be better.
But for now, Doodle Theme is still broken. :-(

Good new & bad news today: Good news: we released a new version of CardDroid Math Flash Cards this weekend with cool new festures.
Bad news: the Amazon version has a bug. I've submitted a fix already, but it's held up in their release process.
The bug causes the Doodle Theme to crash, which I'm sure is disappointing to kids. I've submitted a support request and hope it will be resolved soon.
I apologize for any disappointment this causes the kids out there!

Tip: Prepare kids for summer learning now!
We're starting to prep the kids for what they'll be doing tho summer (in addition to having lots of fun). One kid will be working on handwriting. He'll be writing at least three times a week. The reason to tell him now is that it looks easy compared with school. If we break the news to him in June, he'll be more upset.
One kid will be learning his multiplication facts - again, we're telling him now.
There will probably be a small reward for putting in the time and working consistently, but they'll find the real reward is not having to struggle with handwriting and math facts in the fall.

My CardDroid Math Flash Cards app will be on $99 Amazon Fire TV box in the next week or two. Math practice is more fun on the big screen!
It's really quite good and the voice search works well if you're over 8 or so. The only drawback is that they don't offer a way to filter only the videos included in Amazon Prime. That's OK. I'll just run the Netflix app until they do. :-)

Amazon Fire TV is a tiny box that connects your HDTV to a world of online entertainment. With a huge selection of TV episodes and movies, voice search that really works, plus exclusive features like Amazon FreeTime, it's the easiest way to enjoy Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, low-cost ...

Hi guys! Steve Whitney here. The long division teaching and practice app is well underway now (way past this photo). I'm currently designing it to use the old tried and true method. Is that what you're using? Or does anyone want the "long column of numbers" version too? This is a good time to make any special requests
I look forward to helping the kids in your life learn!
Thanks,
Steve
P.S. This one will be available on iPad and Android tablets to start with. Anyone interested in PC, Mac, or Surface?
P.P.S. Anyone want to volunteer to alpha test when I'm ready? You'll need an iPad, Android Tablet, or Kindle Fire.

For those of you who are interested in Christian apps, I've posted a question on my Looking Upward Apps page. If you'd like to help me decide which Christian app to write next and how I should charge for it, please join the conversation at https://www.facebook.com/lookingupwardapps/posts/639052669477653

Tomorrow I'll submit the free update to CardDroid Math Flash Cards 3.0. It's got 10 Common Core standards, horizontal "number sentences," new and more "gamey" perfect score bonuses, problems within a number range, and a "Doodle" color scheme that's unlocked after 60 minutes of active math practice.
Grab it now and get version 3.0 as a free update: http://www.whitneyapps.com/carddroid-math
We're planning to raise the price of the full version next month.
