Question from a client:

I have older WiFi 5 wireless access points and thinking about getting newer WiFi 7 access points. I have 6 total throughout my home should I replace a few of them or should I replace them all?

Answer: It is best to replace all 6 if your budget allows. Things to keep in mind.

Backward Compatibility: Wi-Fi 7 access points work fine with older Wi-Fi 5 devices.

Infrastructure Bottlenecks: Wi-Fi 7 access points need faster 2.5GbE or 10GbE switch ports and higher Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) budgets to reach top speeds, which may force a wider network upgrade.

Range Constraints: The new 6 GHz band used by Wi-Fi 7 has a shorter range and weaker wall pe*******on than 5 GHz, meaning proper placement matters more than total replacement.

Device Support: Most older phones, laptops, and smart home gadgets cannot use Wi-Fi 7 features, so they will not see major speed gains from a blanket upgrade.

Again if budget allows we recommend to replace all the access points at the same time.

Using Cat5e connectors on a cat6 network cable is not advised.

Client had his electrician terminate them.

Cat6 uses thicker 23 AWG wire that often fails to fit into the narrow channels of Cat5e plugs, and mixing them lowers your network performance to Cat5e speeds. Always match your connectors to the cable category.

We replaced them with cat6 connectors.

What not to do when running network cable for your home or business:

Recently we had a customer contact us about setting up some networking equipment for his home. When we arrived we saw network cable (Cat5e) ran along side some electrical wire. The customer had done all the wiring himself.

It's always good practice when running low voltage wire like network cable Cat5e, Cat6 to separate to prevent electromagnetic interference.

You never want to bundle electrical wire in with network cabling. You want to make sure that you keep your network cable at least 8-12 inches from household electrical cables. Now some cables are shielded that can help with interference but a good rule of thumb is to always try and keep the cables away from each other as much as possible. If you have to cross paths do it at 90 degree angles avoiding running the network and electrical cables parallel to each other.

Running network cable to close to or along side electrical cable can cause slower network speeds, and or dropped connections.
It's always a good idea to ask or hire an electrician or low voltage technician if you plan to wire your home or business.

At Amor I.T. Solutions we specialize in structured low voltage cabling. If you need assistance with your project you can contact us with the information below.

Home owner has 2 buildings, house and a cottage on the same property. They were paying for 2 separate Internet connections with Charter Spectrum.

We told them that we could connect the house to the cottage using 1 Internet connection and they could then call Spectrum and have the cottage disconnected, saving them on a monthly bill.

Started this project fall of 2025. Today we ran Cat6 outdoor burial from the newly built 2 story home to the clients cottage. They have Charter Spectrum at their new home and a separate line at their cottage. We ran the Cat6 outdoor cable and had it buried so that the client could cancel the internet line at the cottage. Now they have 1 internet line that services the house and cottage, saving them some money each month.
