Oldie but a goodie, you get a warning on screen that the FBI doesn't like something you are doing and if you'll pay them $200 they will leave you alone. This is a scam. The only warning the FBI gives is the sound of your door being kicked in.

FYI, there is a new scam currently in use. You'll get a call from an Indian sounding person saying something about how your PC is sending messages to Microsoft. They will then try and sell you something to correct this issue.
News flash.....Microsoft doesn't monitor your PC and only collects anonymous information to prepare fixes for problems that you voluntarily submit to them.
In general, if someone calls or e-mails you unsolicited....it's a scam.

Windows XP - It's been a good ride, almost 10 years and now that Microsoft is planning to release Windows 8 in late 2012, they are sunsetting XP. Make sure you have a plan to move forward, including upgrading your software, which may not work on Windows 8.

Here is another PC don't - Don't turn your PC off by holding in the Reset or Power Button. If your Operating System has a critical file open when you do this, it can corrupt that file making your OS inoperable (your computer won't boot back up). This is the main reason to have a battery backup in case your power flickers or goes off.

Tip of the Day - Below are a lot of good things to do to help your PC, here is a thing to NOT do. Don't load registry cleaners and other software to "speed up" your PC. There isn't any program that can "speed up" your PC (only adding memory and removing programs or reloading your OS will do that). What these programs can do is crash your OS and I've seen it several times before so beware.

Tip of the Day - When you find a need for software check out www.download.com .
This site is a safe haven of free and trial software. Just use their search field to find PDF writers, anitvirus, antispyware, etc.... And the great thing about it is they list ratings by the CNET editors and the general public in addition to how many people have downloaded it. When you compare a 4 star rating that has 17 million downloads to a 5 star that has 2 downloads you have a better idea of how good a product it is!

Tip of the Day - Do you get a lot of spam in your e-mail? Most spam is generated by marketers (with good AND evil intentions) when you sign up online for new accounts or contest. A good way to avoid this is to create a free webmail account with GMail or Yahoo, etc.. that is your "junk" mail account, one you don't use for everyday, important stuff. When you sign up or register for something online, always use your "junk" account and that is 99% of the spam will go!
