BICSI is a professional association supporting the information technology systems (ITS) industry. ITS covers the spectrum of voice, data, electronic safety & security, and audio & video technologies. It encompasses the design, integration and installation of pathways, spaces, fiber- and copper-based distribution systems, wireless-based systems and infrastructure that supports the transportation of

information and associated signaling between and among communications and information gathering devices. BICSI provides information, education and knowledge assessment for individuals and companies in the ITS industry. We serve more than 23,000 ITS professionals, including designers, installers and technicians.

Design pressure doesn’t show up all at once.
It builds – across pathways, planning decisions, and standards that don’t fully align.
And by the time it surfaces, the project is already carrying the risk.

“I pursued the RCDD® to deepen my understanding of structured cabling system design and to move beyond installation level knowledge into true systems design and coordination,” says Justin Benande, RCDD, TECH.

This is where the shift happens.

From installation knowledge to full systems design thinking – how infrastructure connects, scales, and performs.

As projects move into design-build environments, standards matter more and gaps surface faster. Ex*****on depends on what was defined upstream.

In Justin’s view, the RCDD “… represents a higher level of technical competency and credibility within the ICT industry,”

It isn’t about adding a credential.
It’s about meeting the level of understanding modern infrastructure demands.

Infrastructure doesn’t fail in theory. It fails in the field. ⚠️

As systems become more complex, the role of skilled trades becomes more critical and more demanding.

Installation, testing, and validation aren’t just steps in the process.
They determine whether systems perform … or fall short.

But the industry is facing a growing challenge:
Not enough trained professionals. Not enough consistency. Not enough standards-based ex*****on.

This National Skilled Trades Day, we recognize the people doing the work – and the need to strengthen the workforce behind it.

Because better infrastructure starts with better-trained installers.

Most people think #529 plans only apply to college.

But careers don’t always follow that path. 👷‍♂️

They’re built through:
Training. Certifications. Hands-on experience.

Expanded 529 flexibility may help support:
• Training programs
• Certification exams
• Apprenticeships

But it depends on the plan, the program, and the details.

As infrastructure demand grows, the need for skilled professionals is increasing.

Are we aligning how we fund education with how these careers are actually built?

Infrastructure is breaking down in the field. 💥

As power and connectivity systems converge, installation has become the point of success – or failure.

FMP. PoE. . Extended-reach cabling.
More capability. More complexity.

When it’s not handled right?
Performance suffers. Compliance slips. Risk increases.

The latest ICT Today – Installer Edition focuses on where outcomes are decided: installation, validation, and ex*****on.

Part of BICSI’s Installation Workforce initiative – defining what “qualified” looks like today.

Because infrastructure doesn’t perform on intent.
It performs on how it’s installed.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Paulo Marin

As Volunteer Appreciation Month comes to a close, we’re recognizing those who have shaped the industry through years of service.

“As a BICSI member since 1998, I've been contributing to the association in various roles … ”

From leadership to standards development, Dr. Marin’s impact spans decades.

“Having the opportunity to give to also brought me great opportunities to receive … including recognition and being part of a select team of experts.”

And beyond the work:

“I've also been able to make lifelong friends … and spend great time together.”

His invitation:

“If you value volunteer work and want to play a leading role in the future of global ICT, join us on this exciting journey!”

✨ The month may end, but the impact continues.

The shortage facing the skilled trades is real – and it should have the industry’s attention. 🚨

A new report highlighted by Fortune underscores just how serious the challenge has become: experienced workers are retiring, too few are replacing them, and demand for infrastructure keeps rising.

That pressure is already showing up across the built environment.

Projects are getting more complex.
Infrastructure demands are accelerating.
And the workforce responsible for building, installing, and maintaining these systems is under strain.

That matters – not only because of capacity, but because of what it means for delivery.

When the pipeline is thin, it becomes harder to ensure people are entering the field with clear expectations, consistent training, and standards-based practices.

And that has consequences in the field:

📐 Design intent can break down in ex*****on
🪛 Installation quality can vary from site to site
🛜 Systems may not perform as expected; not because the technology is wrong, but because the environment was not built to support it

That is why this conversation matters so much.

The issue is not just workforce availability.
It is whether we are building the kind of workforce the future of infrastructure demands.

For ICT, that means stronger pathways into the industry, clearer standards, and better alignment between training and real-world performance.

The trades are not separate from .
They are part of the same ecosystem that determines whether infrastructure performs.

BICSI’s role is to help support that foundation – by defining practices, advancing standards, and helping create more structured pathways for the next generation entering the field.

Because infrastructure performance is ultimately determined in the field!

We’ve been hearing this more often:
Where’s the value in BICSI now?

Fair question. Because the industry has changed fast.

AI is driving demand.
Data centers are scaling.
Buildings are fully connected.
And the workforce delivering it is stretched thin.

But here’s the issue:
How infrastructure is delivered hasn’t kept up.
The problem isn’t technology. It’s consistency.
Design still happens in silos.
Installation quality varies.

Outcomes depend on interpretation, not standards.

And that leads to:
🔘 Rework
🔘 Missed requirements
🔘 Performance issues
🔘 Increased risk

When infrastructure doesn’t perform, nothing on top of it does.

So where does BICSI fit?
Not in chasing trends.

In defining what it takes to deliver infrastructure that actually works:
✅ Standards that set the baseline
✅ Education that builds real capability
✅ Credentials that validate capability

Not separate pieces. A system.
Because the gap isn’t access to information.
It’s the ability to apply it consistently.

As complexity increases, so does the cost of getting it wrong.
So the question isn’t just where BICSI fits.

It’s this:
What does it take to deliver infrastructure at the level the industry now demands? 💭

ICT is shaping the future.
is accelerating it. ⏩

But only 30% of the workforce building that future are women.

Led by the International Telecommunication Union, International Girls in ICT Day 2026 focuses on:
AI for Development: Girls shaping the digital future.

This isn’t just about representation.
It’s about who influences how infrastructure is designed, built, and scaled.

Because the future of depends on who is qualified to build it.

BICSI advances support for women in ICT through education, certification, and initiatives like the CSC grant that strengthen entry and progression in the field.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Miguelangel Ochoa Briceno, RCDD, CT

“Volunteering for BICSI has been one of the hidden treasures of being part of a Global ICT Community.”

For Miguelangel, goes beyond technical growth – it expands perspective.

“It has opened the doors for me to gain knowledge in areas like team management, project planning, and business development… making me a more complete professional.”

And the impact is global.

“Being part of the active volunteers group has led me to connect with peers from all over the world… applying the same standards and best practices across different regions.”

His advice?

“It’s an investment of your time in your ICT career growth and development.”

Miguelangel’s involvement has grown into leadership, now serving on the BICSI Board of Directors. Now it’s your turn.
