๐Ÿ” Tech Tip Tuesday: Make Sure You Can Get Back Into Your Account

Imagine this:

You wake up one morning and try to check your email. Your password isn't working. You try again. Still no luck. You click "Forgot Password?" and that's when you discover the problem...
There's no recovery email. No backup phone number. No other way to prove the account is yours.

We regularly have customers run into situations like this. Sometimes the account was compromised. Sometimes they simply forgot their password. Either way, without recovery information, getting the account back can be extremely difficultโ€”and sometimes impossible.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protect Yourself Before You Need It

๐Ÿ“ง Add a Recovery Email
Add a secondary email address that you can access independently of the account you're protecting. If you lose access to your primary email, this can give you a way back in.

๐Ÿ” Turn On 2FA/MFA
Two-factor authentication adds another layer of protection. Even if someone gets your password, they still need the second factor to access your account.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Add a Recovery Phone Number
Where available, add a phone number you control and keep it up to date.

๐Ÿงพ Save Your Backup Codes
Many services provide one-time recovery codes when you enable 2FA. Store them somewhere safeโ€”not only inside the account you're trying to recover.

๐Ÿ”„ Check Your Recovery Information
Old phone numbers and email addresses won't help when you need them. Take a few minutes every so often to make sure your recovery information is still accurate.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip:
Your recovery email should be an account you can access without relying on the account you're protecting. If your only recovery method depends on the account you've been locked out of, you haven't really created a backup.

Don't wait until you're locked out to discover you don't have a way back in.

๐Ÿ”ง Need Help? We can help you review your account security and make sure your important accounts have proper recovery and security options configured.

๐ŸŽ“ Tech Tip Tuesday: Back-to-School Tech Checkup

Back-to-school technology isn't just about buying a laptop. Before handing a computer, tablet, or Chromebook over to a student, take a few minutes to make sure it's ready.

๐Ÿ’ป Before School Starts:

๐Ÿ”„ Install Updates
Make sure Windows, ChromeOS, macOS, and installed software are up to date.

๐Ÿ’พ Check Storage
Make sure there's enough room for schoolwork, updates, and applications.

๐Ÿ”‹ Check the Battery & Charger
Make sure the battery holds a reasonable charge and the charger isn't damaged.

โ˜๏ธ Verify Backups
Important schoolwork shouldn't exist in only one place. Make sure important files are being backed up.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Review Parental Controls
If it's being used by a younger student, check screen time, content restrictions, app downloads, and online communication settings.

โš ๏ธ Be Careful When Buying Used or From Marketplace Sellers
Buying a computer from Amazon, Newegg, or another online retailer doesn't necessarily mean you're buying directly from that company.
Many sites also allow third-party sellers and marketplace listings. A computer may be listed as "new," "used," or "refurbished," and the actual seller can make a big difference.

Before buying, check:

โœ… Who is actually selling the computer
โœ… Whether it's new, used, or refurbished
โœ… What warranty is included
โœ… The seller's return policy
โœ… The exact model and specifications
โœ… Whether the battery and charger are included
โœ… Seller reviews and reputation

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip:
A great price isn't always a great deal. An older computer with a worn-out battery, missing charger, limited storage, or no meaningful warranty can end up costing more than buying the right computer in the first place.

๐Ÿ”ง Not sure if a computer is a good deal or whether an existing computer is ready for school? We can help you evaluate, prepare, upgrade, and maintain your technology. ๐Ÿ“ž (502) 354-3508

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Tech Tip Tuesday: Give Your PC a Little Maintenance

Your computer doesn't need to be complicated to take care of. A few simple maintenance tasks can help keep it running cooler, quieter, and more reliably.

๐Ÿ’จ Blow Out the Dust
Dust builds up inside your computer, especially around fans and vents. Too much dust can restrict airflow and cause your PC to run hotter. As a general rule, give your computer a good dusting every 3โ€“6 months. If you have pets, smoke indoors, or your computer is in a dusty environment, you may need to do it more often.

โš ๏ธ A few things to remember:
Shut down and unplug the computer first.
Use compressed air designed for electronics.
Hold fans in place while cleaning them so they don't spin freely.
Don't spray liquids inside your computer.
Don't block the vents after you've cleaned it.

๐Ÿงน Don't Forget the Outside
Keep the area around your computer clean and make sure air vents aren't blocked by walls, furniture, or other equipment.

๐Ÿ”„ Keep Things Updated
Regularly install Windows and software updates. Updates don't just add featuresโ€”they often include important security and stability fixes.

๐Ÿ’พ Check Your Storage
If your drive is getting nearly full, your computer may have a harder time performing normally. Remove things you no longer need and keep important files backed up.

๐Ÿ”ง Need More Than a Dusting?
We also offer advanced PC maintenance services. We can give your computer a more thorough cleaning, inspect the hardware, check cooling and performance, and look for potential problems before they turn into expensive repairs.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip:
A few minutes of maintenance now can help prevent bigger problems later. Your PC works hard for youโ€”give it a little attention once in a while!

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Tech Tip Tuesday: Parental Controls Aren't Just for Phones

Today's kids use more than just smartphones. Between tablets, computers, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and chat apps like Discord, there are more ways than ever to connect online.

The good news is that most devices and services include built-in parental controls to help create a safer online experience.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Take a few minutes to review:

๐Ÿ“ฑ Phones & Tablets โ€“ Screen time, app downloads, and content restrictions.

๐Ÿ’ป Computers โ€“ Child accounts, website filtering, and activity settings.

๐ŸŽฎ Gaming Consoles โ€“ Limit play time, online chat, purchases, and age-rated games.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Chat Apps โ€“ Apps like Discord allow you to adjust privacy settings, control who can send messages, and manage friend requests.

๐Ÿ“บ Streaming Services โ€“ Create child profiles and require a PIN for mature content.

๐ŸŒ Home Wi-Fi โ€“ Many routers let you schedule internet access, pause devices, and filter inappropriate websites.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: No parental control replaces open conversations, but using the tools available can help keep your family safer online.

๐Ÿ”ง Need Help? We can help you configure parental controls on your family's devices and home network, just give us a call.๐Ÿ“ž (502) 354-3508
