To Smart Bulb to Smart Switch. That is the question you might be asking yourself.

Smart-bulbs can be an easy install to any lamp or light fixture that takes normal bulbs. They are typically LED so they are energy efficient. Smart-bulbs can be control by an app, automations or by the manual switch. The downside of controlling it by the manual switch you are unable to manage the bulb through your app or automation schedules if the bulb has been turned off manually. There has to be constant power to the bulb in order to operate it remotely. To turn on a bulb that is currently turned off digitally, turn the switch off and back on and your light turn on. Some hubs can get confused on the state of the bulb when you manually turn on the bulb this way. If you go into the purchase with this expectation you will be fine. Best use is for lamps or lights that you want to make sure gets turned off a specific time or a triggered event.

Light switches do not have a the same concerns as the bulb. The can be turned off and on from the switch or from the app at anytime. The challenge is the install. You have to pretty comfortable with electricity especially when replacing a two way switch. Best to call an electrician for these installs if you are unsure at all.

Want a security system that's smart? Most security systems that are installed do have some home automation though some are better than others. For example, ADT and Simplisafe have a limited amount of devices they work with, most of which need to be part of their brand. Ring has recently opened up its automation to several other manufacturers allowing devices like lights and locks, to be paired to the hub. Stay tuned for a review on the Ring Alarm and its smart home automation. Abode is also very flexible with its integration as well but can get pretty pricey monthly because you are not purchasing the equipment outright.

Tip. Use "If That Then This (IFTTT)," to record events to a spreadsheet. You can later use that information to create a report and track trends in your houses behavior. Once you know the trends you make better decisions on what parts of the life need to be automated.
