Catherine Langer
1917 – 1998
Catherine’s family and friends, of whom there were many, considered her an artist’s artist. Her work in various art mediums revealed a skill and love for what she did whether it was in oil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, or a simple pencil sketch. A keen eye as well as talented hands produced unique pictures of boats, fish, people, and still life. Never fond of using gimmicks or copying from photographs, her main style was to draw and paint from real life subjects.
Born in Brooklyn and studying at Cooper Union and the Art Student’s League in New York, she acquired a strong background in the arts and made many friends in the art community including Charles X Carlson. The war years and raising a family slowed her work but not her love of her art. In later years, she moved west to be with family where she continued to paint with more regularity, usually taking classes in Tillamook County. She enjoyed being among her peers. Unfortunately, she is now gone but her art lives on in what has been preserved. At the time of her passing she lived in Bay City, Oregon.
She seldom sold any of her work but always strived to make another, better, version. Many were not signed or dated by her and often there was artwork done on the reverse side.
I, being her son, decided to preserve what remained of her work by making prints using long lasting pigment inks on fine art archival paper. Additionally, they are framed using acid free mattes and mounting board. Of these, I hope to make available to those who knew Catherine and / or love her art.
