Yesterday I got to meet someone who’s been a huge creative inspiration for me in since I’ve been doing woodworking. Make Something thank you for taking time yesterday to talk with me, and thank you for showing me a different way to approach projects.

It was cool to be up close with projects I have been watching, to really connect with the design process.

I need your honest feedback on this one! 🪵📦

Every week on my live streams, I turn these awesome little bowls. But the pile is getting huge, and I need to find them a good home. I’m thinking about launching a "Mystery Bag" line on the website.

Close call! It happens in the blink of an eye. 🛑💥 Spalted Maple bowl failure.

I was live streaming yesterday, working on a beautiful piece of Spalted Maple, when disaster struck. One second the tools are making clean cuts, and the next second... the entire bowl flies completely off the lathe! 🤯🪵 Spalted wood is famous for having hidden structural flaws, weak spots, or internal fractures that you just can’t see from the outside. When those forces meet a high RPM, things can get dangerous fast. This is exactly why we always wear a full face shield and stay out of the “line of fire.” 🛡️👀

Did the bowl survive?

A shop that smells like a soda shop? Sign me up! 🪵🥤

During the live stream, I was talking about my absolute love for root beer and how I am officially on the hunt for some Sassafras wood to turn on the lathe. If you've never worked with it before, Sassafras is famous for releasing a distinct, sweet root beer aroma the second your tools start hitting the wood and making shavings.

Imagine spending the morning turning a beautiful bowl while the whole workshop fills up with that nostalgic scent. It sounds like absolute heaven. I’ve turned plenty of Spalted Maple, but I think it’s time to switch things up and hunt down a nice Sassafras log.

Let’s talk lathe safety! 🔄🪵

During the live stream, a lot of you were asking how I know what RPM to use when turning a bowl. The truth is, it’s all about balance and diameter.

If you're working on smaller bowls or doing spindle turning, you can crank the RPMs up a bit faster to get those clean, smooth cuts. But the second you throw a large bowl blank on the lathe—especially if it’s still rough and unbalanced—you must slow it down. 🛑📉

If your lathe starts shaking or walking across the floor, that is the wood telling you your RPMs are way too high. Start slow, get the piece balanced and round, and then you can safely bring the speed up. Safety first, beautiful bowls second! 🏺🙌

I have a confession to make... I’ve been doing this wrong for years! 🤦‍♂️💧

The team over at Starbond asked me if I could look into the little “clog pin” that they ship with every single bottle of their CA glue. To be totally honest, I had no idea what this little thing was actually for! I usually just throw it to the side.

Well, my glue tip got completely clogged up because I forgot to wipe it down after a heavy turning session. Normally, I’d grab a sharp awl from the tool rack and try to force my way through it (and usually ruin the tip in the process). 🛠️💥

Instead, I actually tried out the clog pin, and I was so pleasantly surprised. It slips right in, clears the dried glue out of the applicator tip, and instantly opens the bottle back up so you can get right back to your project. No mess, no ruined tips, and no fighting with an awl.
Turns out, they put it in the box for a reason! 😂 Check out the video to see exactly how it works.
