Researchers at Microsoft have found a way to store huge amounts of data inside small glass plates and it could last more than 10,000 years.

The project, called Project Silica, solves the problem of “bit rot,” where hard drives and magnetic tapes slowly decay and need replacing every five to ten years.

In a study published in Nature, scientists explained that they use a powerful femtosecond laser to make tiny permanent marks, called voxels, inside special glass.

Instead of storing data on the surface like a CD or DVD, the information is written in hundreds of layers inside the glass.

Researchers say a single piece of glass about the size of a drink coaster can store up to 4.84 terabytes roughly equal to 2 million printed books.

To read the data, a microscope scans the glass, and an AI system converts the patterns back into digital files.

Because the glass is chemically stable, it can survive extreme heat (up to 290°C), water, and even electromagnetic pulses that would destroy normal electronics.

For now, this technology isn’t meant for home use. It’s designed for large cloud companies and national archives that need long-term data storage.
