An old Avast Anti-Rootkit driver is being abused to deliver Windows malware, according to a report from cybersecurity firm Trellix.

This "Kill Floor" malware drops a copy of the kernel-level Avast driver, which allows it to continue its attack by disabling critical security systems on Windows PCs. The malware then runs different processes to assume control over the computer.

Kernel-level software has deeper access to your computer because it's at the core of your operating system. So, while kernel-level tools can be helpful, malicious or faulty kernel-level software or drivers can pose a big problem and risk to your machine. Remember the CrowdStrike glitch that took down millions of Windows PCs around the world this summer? That was due to a faulty kernel-level update, and Microsoft is looking to restrict this access.
