Most companies aren't losing the AI race because of the technology. They're losing because of how they're thinking about the problem.
That's the lens Perficient CEO Yusuf Tayob brought to The Conference Board's CEO Center Biannual Trustee Policy Summit — where he joined a panel on enterprise AI and policy alongside leaders from across industry and government.
Three things that came out of that conversation:
1. This isn't a technology shift. It's a judgment shift. Every prior wave — ERP, cloud, SaaS — asked companies to digitize what they already did. AI asks something different: letting systems participate in decisions. That requires rethinking processes, operating models, and talent — not just deploying new tools.
2. Accessible data and actionable data are not the same thing. Most enterprises believe they've solved the data problem because they've moved to the cloud. But AI needs context — meaning, relationships, the logic that tells a model what a data point actually means downstream. Closing what Yusuf calls the "information-to-knowledge gap" is the prerequisite for everything else.
3. The workforce story is being told wrong. In regulated industries — healthcare, financial services — Perficient's teams have seen engineers shift from managing compliance overhead to building, and analysts triple their output. The jobs didn't disappear. They got better.
