📢AI and Digital Large Format Printing:
Ai is a new and exciting tool, yet it proves to be a challenge for those of us in the large format printing industry. Ai generated images are created in a raster format. This means the images are flat, using pixel data not meant to be “upscaled”. These graphics are generally good for digital purposes, small prints such as labels, small stickers, possibly t-shirts. However, When you are looking to produce these for a large format application such as billboards, vehicle graphics, signage or wall murals, they simply are not sufficient.
This becomes especially problematic in print formats where size, sharpness, and detail are crucial. AI-generated images do not begin from a fixed resolution or file structure , they are assembled in a predictive, interpretive way that lacks the structural integrity needed for print. Large Format Graphics, by their nature, need to be both large and precise. Any blur, distortion, or inconsistency becomes extremely visible when viewed up close or from certain angles.
Creating a general idea using AI is a good tool for us to use in the proofing process. It can save time in the initial phase of design. However, some of the AI generated imagery have assets in them that are difficult to recreate in large format printing. IE: Lighting effects, color intensities, etc..
✏️🖌️Bulletproof Applications Demand Real Design
Vehicle and Large Format Graphics are not just visual content , they are physical installations. That means they need to perform across multiple criteria:
• Crispness and clarity from up close
• Legibility of type and icons
• Integration with architectural features (panels, corners, doors)
• Long-term durability and colour consistency
AI-generated images may serve as inspiration, but they rarely check all these boxes without intervention. That's where real design tools and production experience become essential.
👉When AI Works Well , and When It Doesn’t👈
It’s not all bad. AI-generated images can work when:
• The graphic will be viewed from a distance (e.g. abstract wall sections or building graphics)
• The output is being used in concept stage or temporary promotional materials
They don’t work well when:
• The graphic will be seen close-up (vehicles, receptions, corridors, seating areas)
• The image includes fine lettering, faces, or recognizable objects
• Branding consistency and color accuracy are critical
