Don’t fall for this tech support scam
🧰 Is your computer running slowly or acting strange? Do not Google “tech support.”
Cybercriminals are posing as members of Best Buy’s Geek Squad to commit various scams, knowing people will take the bait.
Now, the FBI is warning of similar tech support fraud. Crooks are contacting people by email or phone about a renewal for a subscription they didn’t know about. The message includes a number or email address to contact for a refund of $300 to $500.
💸 Here’s what happens when the victim responds:
The scammers persuade them to download remote desktop software to gain access to their computer and help process the refund. The scammer then asks to log into the victim’s bank account to verify the refund. The crook steals those banking credentials to conduct wire transfers into their own accounts. Another trick is “accidentally” depositing money into the victim’s account, then asking the victim for additional banking information. The crook then empties the victim’s account. Scammers are also running scripts that look like service screens, complete with prompts to enter information.
