Currently working on: the stuff nobody posts about. 🙃

I’m deep in my design resource library right now — organizing assets, labeling references, building out systems that future-me can actually find in under thirty seconds. Not glamorous. Not pretty. Absolutely necessary.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about the slow season: it’s not wasted time if you use it right. Every folder I organize, every reference I label, every system I build is shaving time off future projects — which means sharper work, faster turnarounds, and a designer who isn’t frantically digging through seventeen folders called “finals” looking for the right file.

The unsexy admin work IS the strategy. It’s just wearing sweatpants and refusing to be photographed.
If you’ve got a messy asset folder and a guilty conscience about it — hi, same, and we’re fixing it. 🫡

Real talk: the version you see in my portfolio isn’t version one. It’s not even version three. 😂

Trial and error is just... the process. The sketch that was almost right. The concept that made total sense in my head and zero sense on screen. The moment you scrap an hour of work because something felt off and you can’t unknow that.

It’s not glamorous, but it’s how good work actually gets made. Every “wrong” version teaches me something about the project, the client, and honestly, myself as a designer.

What’s a creative lesson you learned the hard way? Tell me below, does misery love company.

Welcome to my happy place. 🏠✨

I spend the vast majority of my day in this room, and honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is where design magic happens, but also where snacks get eaten, dice get rolled, weights get lifted, and inspired spirals happen at 2pm on a Tuesday for no reason at all.

There’s a New Orleans sign on the wall because you can take the girl out of Louisiana, but you cannot take Louisiana out of the girl. There’s art everywhere because I need to be surrounded by things that make my brain happy. And yes, those drawers are full of nail polish. No, that is not work-related. Yes, it absolutely counts as a creative supply.

This is the room where I’m most myself: designer, maker, collector of things that spark joy, and enthusiastic patron of organized chaos. Every brand I’ve ever built started somewhere in here, between the books, the stickers, and whatever playlist was doing the heavy lifting that day.

What does your workspace look like? Drop it below & no tidying up first. 👇

Hey y’all! It’s Meet the Maker time, and I’m kicking things off with the thing I’m honestly the worst at: talking about myself...

I’m Sam. I’m a graphic designer, a lifelong artist, and the brains behind Something New Designs. I work with small creative businesses and makers who know their brand could look better, they just need someone to help them get there without losing what makes them them.

My style is modern-retro with an illustrative twist. I celebrate the makers, the bold, the passionate, and the beautifully creative. Swipe to meet me properly.

The process. 🤎✨
Wednesday I shared the why behind this piece. Today I’m sharing the how. Watching it come together reminds me that healing isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s slow. Steady. One line at a time. One choice at a time. One moment of showing up for yourself, even when it’s hard.
If you’re in the thick of your own process right now—whether it’s creative, personal, or somewhere in between—I see you. Keep going. It’s worth it.
What’s something you’re working on right now? (Creative or otherwise.) Tell me in the comments. 👇🤎

Designing a font feels a lot like starring in your own cartoon:
chaotic → delusional → strategic little pause → obsessive → triumphant.

It’s messy, hilarious, and incredibly worth it.

A good design isn’t about cramming in everything. It’s about knowing what to leave out.

Simplicity isn’t laziness, it’s confidence.

Color theory walked so chaos could run lol… but in all seriousness, they’re funkier color combos the better. You just gotta trust your gut (and your contrast ratios).

Tell me what your favorite “it shouldn’t work but it does” combo is below! 👇🏼 and save this post the next time you want some unconventional inspo.

Sweet Bird Bakes’ signature green came first — full of freshness and life.
But the brand needed something to bring balance, warmth, and that cozy “handmade” feel.

Espresso brown stepped in as the anchor — tying every piece together without stealing the spotlight.

Because sometimes, the best brand upgrades aren’t new colors… they’re the ones that make your originals shine.
